Description

Musique Concrete-- Pierre Schaeffer: Objets lies (1959) / Francois-Bernard Mache: Terre de feu 2nd version (1963) / Michel Philippot: Etude III (1962) / L'Oiseau-Chanteur 2nd version (1963) / Luc Ferrari: Tete et queue du dragon 2nd version / Ivo Malec: Dahovi 2nd version / Bernard Parmegiani: Danse (1962)

Candide CE 31025 USA undated LP Vinyl: vg+
Cover: vg+ (some edge wear, 1" split at right edge of bottom seam) Rare and superb anthology compiled by Ilhan Mimaroglu of early electronic tape music spliced at the Groupe de Recherches Musicales studios, with several exclusive tracks which remain unreissued. These amazing pieces move from cut up noise to densely organized collages of field recordings to atonal segments grounded in more familiar instrumental timbres, often all within the space of a few minutes. The elemental Mache piece is built of sounds modeled after fire and water noises. Parmegiani's work, one of his earliest, is derived entirely from tape-manipulated voice. The version of Malec's Dahovi included here is further evolved and longer than its earlier release on the Philips Prospective 21e Siecle series (an lp which I am also currently auctioning). Includes insert with notes by Mimaroglu, himself a onetime GRM resident. Highly recommended.

Schaeffer was a radio engineer involved with the French resistance during WWII and a researcher of television technology in addition to being the inventor of musique concrete; he founded the world's first tape music studio (which would become the INA-GRM), was among the earliest composers to use the turntable as an instrument, invented the Phonogene (a proto-sampling keyboard), worked with Pierre Henry, Jon Appleton, Jean-Michelle Jarre, Michel Chion, Michel Redolfi, Jean-Claude Risset, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Edgar Varese, Olivier Messiaen, and Iannis Xenakis, and his groundbreaking work influenced contemporaries like John Cage, Tod Dockstader, Vladimir Ussachevsky, Tom Dissevelt, and Jean-Jacques Perrey, and later electronic artists like Nurse With Wound, Christian Marclay, Otomo Yoshihide, and Merzbow. Malec is a Croatian composer who studied under Messiaen. Ferrari is an electro-acoustic composer who studied under Honegger, Alfred Cortot, and Messiaen. Mache studied composition under Messiaen and is also a writer and an expert in Greek archaeology. Bayle studied with Messiaen, Henri Pousseur, Schaeffer, and Stockhausen. Parmegiani was a television sound engineer who became an understudy of Schaeffer.
