Fantastic and mega-rare 1974 3lp box set in perfect still-sealed condition containing mostly atonal and experimental violin-centered works by American modern and postmodern composers, performed by Paul Zukofsky with Gilbert Kalish on piano. The program is based on a series of performances Zukofsky gave at Town Hall in New York. There are 14 pieces total, many of which bring in additional instrumentalists including Alvin Brehm on contrabass. The highlights are beautiful works by Feldman, Cage, Sessions, Babbitt, Crumb, Wolpe, and an eccentric experimental piece with music boxes by Brant (see the image below for all composition titles). Includes a booklet with extensive notes by Zukofsky and Nicolas Slonimsky. This set is highly sought after and is virtually impossible to find sealed.

Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, colaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, Joseph Beuys, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Morton Feldman studied under Wallingford Riegger and Stefan Wolpe and was influenced by Scriabin, Ligeti, Cornelius Cardew, and Mauricio Kagel. Babbitt studied under Marion Bauer and Roger Sessions, worked with Vladimir Ussachevsky and Otto Luening at the Columbia Princeton Electronic Music Center, and became known for his extension of the theories of Arnold Schoenberg into a 'total serialism', similar to techniques used by Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, and Luigi Nono. Sessions worked with Alban Berg and Luigi Dallapiccola and is associated with Bela Bartok. Piston taught Leonard Bernstein and studied under Nadia Boulanger. Brant is known for his experiments with spatial music which incorporate the physical spacing of the players as part of the composition; he studied under George Antheil, Aaron Copland, Wallingford Riegger, and Rubin Goldmark. Riegger studied under Robert Haussmann, Max Bruch, and Edgar Stillman-Kelley, was a mentor to Morton Feldman and Henry Brant, associated with Charles Ives, Henry Cowell, and Carl Ruggles, and experimented with 12 tone techniques. George Crumb is an academic and composer who studied under Boris Blacher, Ross Lee Finney, and Eugene Weigel, and cites Debussy, Mahler, Schumann, and Bartok as prime influences. Wolpe was a student of Anton Webern, a devotee of Schoenberg and Busoni, and an influential teacher of Morton Feldman, Ralph Shapey, Herbert Brun, and Charles Wuorinen; he taught at the legendary Black Mountain College with John Cage, David Tudor, and Lou Harrison.

Packing - I pack professionally and adequately using new record mailers exclusively from Cameron Packaging (which I have determined are the best and most protective). For used lps, I remove the lp and inserts from the jacket, cover it in a layer of bubble wrap, and then reinforce it with a cardboard insert. All records are shipped with poly plastic sleeves. If you'd like your package done any differently, just let me know.
