McPHEE PROG PSYCH HAMMOND ORIGINAL SUPER RARE AUS LP ARCHIVE COPY NEAR MINT

You are bidding on the following item.

This is a 100% original Australian issue of the self-titled McPHEE LP recorded in 1971.

A brilliant example of Hammond driven heavy psych / prog.

Jim Deverell & Benny Kaika were originally from New Zealand, and Deverell & Tony Joyce had previously worked together as session players, backing artists like Digby Richards, The Delltones and Little Sammy & The In People.  Faye Lewis had been a session singer and had also been a member of LUKES WALNUT, the group that replaced Tully as house band for the HAIR musical in early 1970.  English born Terry Popple had been a member of late 1960's British band TRAMLINE, who issued a couple of albums on the Island label.  He linked up with McPHEE shortly after the group formed, when he travelled to Australia in early 1970, and the band began working on the Sydney club and wine bar circuit.

McPhee was strongly influenced by the acid-rock and progressive styles coming from the UK, as indicated by their covers of songs done by acts like Spooky Tooth and Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity, as well as the emerging west coast American sounds like Neil Young.  In this respect, they operated in the same general area as contemporary groups like MELISSA and GALADRIEL, although on record they were probably the hardest-hitting outfit of the three.

Most of the album tracks are cover versions including SPOOKY TOOTH “The Wrong Time”, NEIL YOUNG “Southern Man”, RICHIE HAVENS “Indian Rope Man”, DELANEY & BONNIE “Superstar” and THE BEATLES “I Am the Walrus”.  The two originals are “Sunday Shuffle” (also issued as a 7” single) and “Out to Lunch”.

There are some incredible PROGRESSIVE ROCK moments on this LP and the raunchy female vocals certainly add to the appeal.

Legendarily hard to find in great shape at any time it sold less than 500 copies on release. We licensed and re-issued the album on CD for the first time over a decade ago and have subsequently seen less than a handful of original vinyl LP turn up since. This an EXTREMELY RARE record and one of the top collectors items from Australia.

Cat No: VIOLETS HOLIDAY SHVL-934,391 (1972).

    CONDITION:

  Cover – EXCELLENT.

READ CAREFULLY: The COVER is graded at EXCELLENT as this has certainly been an untouched archive copy. It has a clean 2” seam split on the bottom edge which could be repaired. Overall this incredibly easy to damage sleeve has almost no wear, discoloration or grubby marks. Amazing!

Record – EXCELLENT. Totally clean labels.

READ CAREFULLY: The RECORD is graded at EXCELLENT. The surface is pretty much NEAR MINT but for a visible pressing mark on track one side 1 (The Wrong Time) which leads to some barely discernible background noise in a couple of quiet spots on a record which never sounds perfect anyhow. So, simply stated if you want a fantastic keeper copy of the record this one fits the description. There is one spindle mark on the label and also a red & white sample sticker otherwise the labels are totally clean.
