1970 Debut album: May Blitz (Vertigo 6360 007) 1970

For auction is an extremely rare and original and example of early 70’s prog rock from May Blitz, although opinions vary over genre, all are equally valid.

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL PRESSING I.E. NOT A RE-ISSUE. SO THIS IS THE REAL DEAL.

I’ve decided to have a clear out of my overly full collection of Vinyl which is sad, but necessary. Pre Christmas decluttering and all that!

Equally sad, is that I vividly remember buying this album – hence no previous owners – 37 years ago as just a very wee lad!

The band was (allegedly) named after a famous German air campaign on Britain during WWII, May Blitz featured former Jeff Beck Group drummer Tony Newman (formerly of Sound Incorporated with Jeff Beck).

This heavy rock power trio recorded two albums for Vertigo.

The first eponymous LP aptly titled May Blitz is for auction, which is highly sought after by discerning collectors.

This Album/Vinyl/LP is in excellent condition:

Sleeve: Good (not mint but definitely respectable!)

Vinyl condition: Looks and sounds terrific

Other: There are no visible marks etc, great example

The trio comprised:

Reid Hudson - Bass, Vocals

What follows are two sets of observations/insights on this original 70's band;

“My first impression of May Blitz on the opening track “Smoking The Day Away,” on their self-titled LP May Blitz, was that James Black (guitar, vocals) sounded just like Jack Bruce. The song is an unforgettable blend of both acoustic and electric guitars, and the outing lasts for over eight minutes. As their music continually changes and evolves throughout the LP, many different bands from that time may come to mind. Music like this seems to bring about those feelings and memories for me all the time.

If you were to place their music into a category, they would fall somewhere in between rock, blues and progressive. Every track has something different to offer, so to say that they played progressive-blues-rock with a psychedelic edge is the best description I could possibly give.

”I Don’t Know?” is an excellent blues-rock rave up with psychedelic elements that gave it a Hendrix feel with ample amounts of fuzz and wah-wah. It became apparent to me early on that they were a technically advanced trio that had no trouble displaying their many talents in every song. Tony Newman’s congas, bongos, and the vibraphone certainly put their music into an entirely different space than the average rock band and Reid Hudson had to be a better than average bass player to set the pace for all of these complexities found in each individual song. James Black was an outstanding lead singer and guitar player and without question the core from which the bands persona emanated from.

Side two opens with “Squeet,” a funky blues number with a long intro before the vocals kick in. Because of the long instrumental stretches found in every song, when Black’s vocals would start on queue it sounded more pronounced and had more of an impact. I particularly enjoyed the long instrumental runs because each one had a variance of personality and feeling with a strong sense off purpose and meaning that propelled it.

The album comes in a gatefold sleeve complete with the original bizarre cartoon artwork that the band had on their albums. This is a classic recording, a real keeper for the ages. It is highly recommended for anyone that enjoys any or all of the genres I referred to in this review.”

"May Blitz (alongside Rory Gallagher's Taste) were among the first of the newly formed hard rock power trios to take up the challenge of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience; that is, making the biggest possible noise with the smallest available line-up, but never losing sight of melody and finesse while they did so.

Certainly anyone catching their early live show was guaranteed to leave with their ears ringing but their brainbox humming, and the band's debut album was a seamless reiteration of their in-concert impact, all the way down to the extended riffing and miniature solos.

May Blitz's strongest point, in terms of audience recognition, was drummer Tony Newman, and fans of the jazz-inflected style that he injected into the Jeff Beck Group certainly won't be disappointed by what they find here - indeed, with guitarist James Black beside him, it's not difficult to compare May Blitz to the Beck band's Beck-Ola, and find the better-known disc come up wanting every time.

The epic "Smoking the Day Away" kicks things off in dynamic form, laying down the grinding, almost proto-metallic assault that was May Blitz's raison d'etre; later in the set, "Dreaming", "Virgin Waters", and "Squeet" all howl with a vengeance that might sound a little old-fashioned today, but was breathtakingly fresh at the time. Even better is "Fire Queen", which essentially blueprints the best parts of every metal act from Judas Priest to the Cult, except it doesn't hang around long enough to spoil the effect. Rather like May Blitz themselves, in fact."
