Mal Waldron on Status 8316
This is the rare Van Gelder-stamped deep-groove (Side 2) mono pressing of Mal Waldron “The Dealers” on Status ST 8316. The playing surface is in near-new condition, with a high luster; perhaps played once. The coated cover is bright and clean throughout, with very light rubbing on the front. Personnel include John Coltrane, Jackie McLean, Frank Wess, Doug Watkins, and Art Taylor. Status records are often overlooked, since so many of them are reissued from the Prestige catalogue. “The Dealers” is one of the few exceptions, consisting entirely of previously unissued contents. The two tracks on Side 1 are from the April 19, 1957 Waldron session that also produced “Mal 2”; the two tracks on Side 2 are alternate takes from a September 20, 1957 session that also produced “Wheelin’ and Dealin”.
