Label/Format: Island – full pink i format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in very impressive condition: clean, fresh and attractive with a beautiful pale, real pink colour – a shade I have seen less often. Any surface blemishes few and very faint and spindle marks are very few, fine and faint, indeed side one has hardly any at all, even with close viewing under light, I am struggling to find a discernable one at all.

Cat Number: ILPS 9108.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 133 grams. About average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce on the pink label and seldom seen with a decent cover that is somewhat prone to most forms of wear.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The band’s debut album from back in 1969, yes they went that far back. Very limited sales for this band on Island, that later became quite big when their career’s were resurrected by David Bowie around 1972 on CBS records. This is a terrific debut that was deliberately made to sound a bit like Bob Dylan back by The Rolling Stones. The copy on offer has the song ‘Backsliding Fearlessly’ in the correct order on the label. The condition too is superb, the actual record grades as a stunning near mint and the cover pretty close too. This debut appears infrequently on Pink and in this condition should appeal to most collectors, the stunning artwork is always worthy of particular mention.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England.

Cover Front: Little short of magnificent and one of the most attractive originals I have ever seen. The lack or rubbing, grubbiness, marks and creases makes this an exceptional example. Just a couple of very fine surface creases near the corners but little else. A totally natural, very fine manufacture line is just seen near the top (parallel on both sides), which is a gripper mark in the finishing process – it barely shows and is seen on many similar covers. A lovely example to please most fans and collectors.

Cover Back: The only blemish on the back is a crease near the top right corner, may be a mild knock in the past? This pretty much the only reason this failed to get a Mint(-) grading. This crease less than moderate with modest visibility, but present nonetheless. The lack of rubbing and especially ringwear more than compensates I feel.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The same crease shows a little near the left of the centre fold hinge, that apart, little else to fault.

Top Edges: Any rub traces very light and faint.

Bottom Edges: Both practically unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both neat and mostly sharp.Very little wear at all and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mostly very straight – slightly out near the top from the mild knock as mentioned above, uncompressed and folded square The edges meet up perfectly together and parallel, all good news for maximum neatness for the more discerning. All text is perfect and unworn and the white spine remains generally clean and ungrubby.

Corners: In terms or rubbing, barely any and even with the possible light knock on the spine top area, all retain very fine to excellent shape. A small and light crease to the spine top tip area and a further crease further down as explained already.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this wear-prone early cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. The corner area crease is mild and has minimal visual impact to a still beautiful cover. It has so little else to fault and I still regard it as exceptional, it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: fairly lightly aged with some modest darkening and edge toning from the seam adhesive. Both window circles are pristine and undamaged, the lining solid and ultra clear with minimal crinkle. The date code on this one is 1/0570, so not an ultimate first, but still a very early example (please see this in close-up).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a supreme visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence, but not so untypical from this collection with any surface marks tiny few, mega light and barely even visible. Two fantastic playing surfaces that defy their great age, without any doubt, this has hardly seen light-of-day. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fine record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds hardly even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pink i pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
