As far as 12-month periods go, few have yielded a more definitive array of albums than 1995, which is pretty much ground zero for the East Coast hip-hop renaissance. GZA, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Smif N Weston, Guru, KRS-One, Erick Sermon, The Roots and more all dropped seminal long players, but the best of them all is this one from Mobb Deep. Characterised by a dark, low-slung groove and ominous, candle-lit soul, the production is raw and stripped back. The samples are eerie, distorted and sparse and the introspective lyrics focus on crime in New York's inner city neighbourhoods in a truly gritty reportage style. 31 years on, the sound remains stealthy and seductive in equal measure.
