Label/Format: Harvest - original format with ‘Gramophone’ text rim. Side two has the original Factory Sample sticker as can be clearly seen on my scan, this very slightly aged being ultra critical (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and few, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Brief Info: Album number four for this gifted singer, guitarist and songwriter, it proved to be the last he made on Harvest. An elusive album and this a very early-made example in very fine condition. One of Harvest’s less lauded acts but he remained one of John Peel’s favourites and he enjoyed a loyal cult following – his early albums are all of the highest quality and this arguably up there with the very best – this is the first one of the these I have offered on Ebay.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and with it’s matt gold ink, this is a very fine example of a cover that will never wear well. An unlaminated gatefold format, printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Cover Front: Any rubbing on this unforgiving colour and surface is very mild indeed – so often, these gold ink covers blacken and look a real mess – this has not happened here. There is a fine gripper line near the centre of front and back, that purely in manufacture and a light totally natural blemish, nothing more. Barely any creasing and only a mild pressure line against the inside flipback construction near the top edge. This will not prove too easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back very similar: a light rim rub near the top edge and there is a small rub and tip crease on the bottom left corner tip. The lack of deep penetrating ringwear is a bonus on such a cover, especially so with a thick record inside for over 40 years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The odd small corner tip crease apart, little else to fault.

Top Edges: Both practically unworn.

Bottom Edges: A little light patchy rubbing on the back edge.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front closed edge is very neat and crisp. The opening back inner edge has thickened a little with relatively light traces of burring. The outer edge which is a tiny fraction short of the inner has faired well with not a lot to fault.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression but with a tilt from right to left. Incredibly, the gold ink surface has barely rubbed at all. There was never any text printed on this spine.

Corners: The back bottom left corner has a small rub and tip crease, that apart, the others are all very neat and show little wear which is something of a surprise on this fragile sleeve.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very delicate early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This still attractive, and arguably undergraded cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: marked down a little for one central edge split from record movement and some moderate darkening. So fairly lightly aged but still very neat and retaining it’s original lining with barely any creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This elusive and top quality, early-pressed Harvest record plays up to, and most-all even exceeds it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or really significant clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Just a tiny few very muted ticks were just heard on side two, and even this was practically lost within the music – I barely even noticed – this too being played on a very revealing and sensitive system. Few copies will outperform this very early ‘Factory Sample’ pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
