Description
A couple of years ago, one of Australia's most respected and most eloquent music writers passed away - he was active all throughout the 80's and 90's, and to a lesser extent, right up until recently. His credibility was perhaps best illustrated by the high reverence in which he was held by his journalistic peers, and especially by the absolute cream of Australia's musicians - members of Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil, Radio Birdman, Sports, Angels, and many many others counted him as an ally (itself rare in the too often isolationist world he inhabited)...and he had a flurry of loyal readers too...all of whom, it's my guess, would have felt a loop of sadness at the thought his indepth and articulate, impassioned appraisals would no longer be forthcoming.
Just recently I was offered to buy his record collection, which I did, feeling pretty honoured to do so...and here then, is one of the items from that collection:

This is an original TEST PRESSING of the FIRST issue of this LP (here's some info for trivia buffs: at the time of its release, Regular were distributed by Festival, and Festival gave this album their 'RML' numbering prefix, meaning it was to be a TV-advertised release AND all stores with Festival accounts were automatically delivered stock of it, regardless of whether they'd ordered any or not - this was how the RML thing worked - they would, at least, take any unsold stock back, but the stores would be billed and expected to pay for these before being creditted later on - I had a store at the time and it was pain in the butt, to be honest...anyway, in 1982 Festival lost Regular and WEA took over distribution - this LP was re-issued by them with an RRLP-1203 catalogue number...but by 1985 Regular were back with Festival...and this LP came out a third time - re-cut, with different matrix numbers and a new catalogue number again: L-38442)...this has plain white labels rubber-stamped with some very basic info...and comes in a fold-over 'cover flat' (on textured card) plus inner sleeve (which has had a sliver razored off on the opening edge - it's not quite square).
But the interesting thing here, is the matrix numbering. I don't have a copy of the normal stock copy of RML-53006, but according to the Discogs website listing, it should have these matrix numbers in the run-off grooves:
SIDE 1: 19 SMX58103 P2A
- SIDE 2: 2/ SMX58104 P2B
- ...but on this one here, the matrix numbers are simpler:
SIDE 1: SMX58103 P2A
- SIDE 2: SMX58104 P2B
- ...suggesting this may be an earlier un-used test pressing...but if you have a stock copy of the LP, you should be able to check. I'll have to leave that one with you.
