First released in 1992, Countdown to Extinction marked the fifth album from Big 4 thrash metal alumni Megadeth. Serving as follow-up to 1990's Rust In Peace, it was the second album in a row from the band to feature an unusually solid line-up, now considered the "classic" stable of primary snarling axeman/band dictator Dave Mustaine, along with guitarist Marty Friedman, bassist David Ellefson and drummer Nick Menza. Achieving the biggest commercial accomplishment of their career by entering the Billboard 200 at number two before eventually going on to be certified double platinum, the record is rife with some of the most well-known, obligatory and live essentials from the Megadeth canon. From the opening rager 'Skin o' My Teeth', to the rambling lunacy of 'Sweating Bullets' to easily one of the greatest metal songs of all time 'Symphony Of Destruction', the record is a masterclass in simplifying formula for broader appeal without diluting essence. It also boasts one of the band's most criminally overlooked tracks with the soberingly relevant 'Foreclosure Of A Dream', which takes a more melodic direction whilst unpacking the US market crash and housing crises.
