GRADING
COVER: Very Good. Cover has some light wear, and soiling on the edges. Seams are in relatively good condition, only light seam splitting on the far right edges near the opening.. not in the middle.
RECORD: Poor. Heavily scratched.. essentially unplayable. I would only recommend buying this record for the cover, to either upgrade your copy or to have it displayed for the fantastic Jim Flora artwork.
Jim Flora (1914-1998) created distinctive and unusual album cover illustrations for RCA Victor and Columbia Records during the 1940s and 1950s. He was also a prolific commercial illustrator from the 1940s to the 1970s, and author/illustrator of 17 popular children's books. He had a cartoonish style that, in its earliest (1940s and 1950s) incarnations betrayed a diabolic humor and uninhibited sense of the macabre.
Flora was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, and attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati from 1935 to 1939. Following a brief, if struggling freelance career as a commercial artist in Cincinnati, he was hired by Columbia Records in 1942 to work in the art department under the legendary Alex Steinweiss, inventor of the illustrated album cover. Flora moved to Connecticut (Columbia was based in Bridgeport at the time), and after one year was promoted to Art Director. He launched Columbia's celebrated new release promotional monthly, Coda, in 1943 and continued illustrating and designing all issues thru 1945. He worked in various executive positions at the label until 1950. Flora felt ill-suited for bureaucracy, and grew frustrated because he was working a desk job but doing little art. Having reached his limit of what he called "endless meetings, endless memos, and wrestling with budgets," he resigned, and in 1950, "bitten by the bug of wanderlust," drove to Mexico with his family in a Hudson sedan. They stayed 15 months, during which period Flora and his artist wife Jane Sinnicksen painted, created woodcuts, and lived as bohemian gringos in Taxco. They returned to Connecticut in 1951 and Flora embarked on a freelance commercial art career in which he would thrive for decades.
Throughout a long and acclaimed career he illustrated covers and interior articles for dozens of mainstream magazines, including Fortune, Holiday, Life, Look, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Park East, Mademoiselle, Charm, Research and Engineering, Computer Design, Sports Illustrated, Collier's, and Pic.
Between 1955 and 1969, he wrote and illustrated 11 children's books for Harcourt Brace, including The Fabulous Firework Family (1955), The Day the Cow Sneezed (1957), Charlie Yup and His Snip-Snap Boys (1959) and Little Hatchy Hen (1969). For Atheneum, between 1972 and 1982, he created six children's books, including Pishtosh, Bullwash, and Wimple (1972) and Stewed Goose (1973).
After his death, his long-neglected paintings and private fine artworks began achieving notoriety thanks to the research and cataloging of Irwin Chusid and Barbara Economon, who have compiled and authored two books of Flora's rarely-seen works.
