Brazilian singer and bandleader Tim Maia hit a strange and brilliant peak with Racional, Vol. 1, recorded during his short-lived immersion in the Rational Culture movement - a Brazilian UFO religion - in the mid-70s. Trading love songs for cosmic gospel, Maia channels his fervour into feverish funk workouts and luminous brass anagrams, where the suggestion abounds: uncontacted greys float in wait over the city of Rio. The lyrics point skyward, full of spiritual slogans and metaphysical zeal, yet the playing stays deep in the pocket. Long whispered about for its rarity and the myth surrounding Maia's withdrawal from mainstream music soon after, Racional, Vol. 1 remains a singular document, fusing soul conviction, funk discipline and unfiltered spiritual obsession.
