Help'S One of Those Early-1970s Groups that Had Considerable Talent and ReleasedA pairof Decent albums that just SeemTo have gotten lost inThe Tidal WaveofMUSIC BLEG Released During that Timeframe. Their short recording catalog ( Two albums and Two singles) is so sortof interestingFORThe Musical ShiftTheband Underwent withoutA Year's Time - Their Self Titleded Debut Album HadAHEAVY Country rock vibe, whileThe Follow-up set featuredA Far More Rock Orientation. It's actual kind of funny To note thatA Website run byOneofThe Members (Refernedmed Below), does not Even Mention thisband ...
A California-Based Trio Featuring The Talents of Former Evergreen Blueshoes Drummer Chet McCracken, Singer/Guitanist/Keyboard Player Jack Merrill, and Bassist Rob Rochan, in 1970The Group ScoredA Contract with DeccaRecords leadingToThe releaseof 1971's Cleverly Titled " Help ". Co-Produced by Val Garay and Mark Hopkins McNabb, The Ten Performances (Including Nine Originals), Were are all Quite Good, with Theband displayA crackFOR Penning Pretty and Commercial Melodies. As lead singer Merrill Displayed A Likeable Voice and some nice guitar chops, while Mccracken and Rochan More Than Held Up Their Shares ofThe workload. The Trio Displayed some very nice harmony vocal skills. The Downside what that The album had AHEAVY focusOn Acoustic Country-Rock, Folk, and Singer-Songwriter Numbers. Individual performances like ' Open up The door' and 'EasyTo Be free 'Were first-rate, but when string back-to-back over large swathsofThelpThe Results startedTo Sound Similar and Somewhat Plodding. Far Better were The isolated, up Tempo Rockers Such as 'Run Away' And 'Keep in Touch'. That might well explain The major shift in musical direction with their sophomore release. ()
Their sophomore release is The One that tendsTo Grave People's Attention, but myl argueThe Debut isA Grower. Yeah, there Wereen't Enough Rocker (Especialy On TheFirst side), but song-for-song thisOne What Pretty Impressive. (Rdten1/rateyourmusic.com)
