Description

Hello. Up for sale are two 7” reel-to-reel tapes (1/4”) that run at 7 ½ speed. These tapes originally belonged to Cal Reed. Cal was responsible for the film With Their Eyes on the Stars and these tapes represent various songs and many alternative takes from the 1963 sessions recorded at Capitol for the soundtrack. The performers heard on these tapes include: John Stewart, Michael Stewart, Jerry Burgan, Sue Ellen Davies, Ray Brown, Eileen Duffy, with additional vocals by Scott McKenzie and John Phillips. The bands represented by this amazing pool of talent include: The Kingston Trio, The Ridgerunners (soon to be the We Five), The Journeymen, and The Mamas and the Papas.

For more on these tapes and to listen to full-length tracks, click the following link to a page on my website:

http://www.theplaydium.com/The_Ridgerunners.html

Keep in mind that although there are several selections to choose from on the web page, the tapes contain many more tracks. Among them is The Cruel War sung by Scott McKenzie. Scott had the mega-hit San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair).  His vocal, as heard on this tape, did not make the final cut for the film (though in my opinion, it should have). Another example of an excellent song that failed to make the cut is This is the New Frontier. In the film, an alternative version/lyric was used and the song became This is the Next Frontier. Personally, I prefer the "New" version heard on this reel-to-reel tape. And speaking of the film, the Technicolor print once belonging to filmmaker Cal Reed is up for sale in a separate auction.

Reel I contains thirteen tracks. All begin with a voice in the studio identifying the track with markers like “Scene 2 overdub Take 3.” If I have time this week, before this auction ends, I'll add a complete track listing.

Reel II contains eight tracks. Once again, all begin with voice markers from someone in the studio.

Finally, although “content copyright” is seen at the bottom of this particular web page for these sessions, I in no way claim any copyright to any of this material. Written on both of the boxes is “Office Copy” so I’ll assume the originals are out there somewhere, though I wouldn’t bet my life on it.

The winning USA bidder to pay $3 for Priority shipping with full insurance and Delivery Confirmation. Canada to pay $20, and Overseas to pay $25 for International Priority. Thanks and good luck!
