Description
This is a great opportunity for collectors or fans to acquire a very rare, original
copy of the London Calling double album signed by all four members of the
band, just as the album is due to be reissued in time for the 25th anniversary next week.
I met the Clash after going backstage at their Ipswich Gaumont gig
during the London Calling tour of 1979/80. I chatted to Joe Strummer for
about 20 minutes, during which time he was everything you hoped he'd be as a
fan, incredibly friendly to everyone who approached him, giving them as much
time as they wanted. Mick Jones spent his whole time chatting up a girl,
while the other two were quite quiet. The gig had actually been stopped by
Strummer half way through, when the friend I went with was caught gobbing at
the band. Strummer hauled him up on stage, having called proceedings to a
halt, and in front of everyone, gave my mate a long lecture about how
gobbing was not 'the done thing anymore'. My friend had not got round to
leaving the stage when the music resumed, and Strummer ended up booting him
off! But when we went backstage together afterwards, Joe Strummer was not only
equally nice to my mate, but even apologised for making an example of him in
that way, as he wasn't the only one who'd been spitting. It was a memorable
night and the Clash were an absolutely brilliant live band, as anyone who
saw them on that tour will testify.
Three of the signatures are very clear, but Paul Simenon's is fainter than
the others because he wrote his name in red pen, therefore it doesn't show up
as well. I am selling this item relucantantly, having treasured it for the
best part of 25 years. The cover is slightly scuffed round the edges, otherwise it's in very good condition, while the inner sleeves, containing full lyrics and photos of the
band, are in excellent condition. The record itself is also in very good condition. I will include a letter of authentication, signed by myself with my contact details, for the buyer to use in the future should they ever wish to sell it on.
