Description
This is the original first UK single release of WHOLE LOTTA LOVE B/W LIVIN' LOVIN' MAID (SHE'S A WOMAN) on Atlantic Records, 584309.
Printed on the red ATLANTIC label are 'Made in Gt. Britain' and 'Under licence from Atlantic Recording Corp., U.S.A.' It has a removable centre. It comes in its original Atlantic Records white paper sleeve.
The machine stamped matrix numbers are for side A: 584309 A//1 111 and for side B: 584309 B//1 11 3.
Atlantic Records released this promotional version of 'Whole Lotta Love' coupled with 'Livin' Lovin' Maid (She's A Woman)' in the United States on 7 November 1969. A shorter edited version of the song with the freeform section cut and an earlier fade-out, it was intended for radio play to promote the band's second album Led Zeppelin II. In the United Kingdom, Atlantic Records had expected to issue the edited version and pressed initial copies for release on 5 December 1969. However, band manager Peter Grant was adamant that the band maintain a "no-singles" approach to marketing their recorded music in the UK, and he halted the release. Only a handful of copies made their way to radio stations and it is very rare for a copy to come up for auction.
Both sides of the vinyl are in mint condition. The sound quality is excellent and both sides play free from skips, jumps or any distortion.
The labels are clean and free from scuffs, marks and stains of any sort. The A side is date stamped -5 DEC 1969 indicating the proposed release date. There is a small signature on the bottom left of the A side, once attributed to Jimmy Page but never verified.
The May 2015 edition of Record Collector magazine lists the single as having recently sold for £600, so this is the Buy it Now price. Copies rarely come up for auction, particularly in mint condition. This is a great opportunity to own a unique version of a classic Led Zeppelin track as well as a genuine artefact of rock history.
