The Music & Sound
Cat Scratch Fever is Ted Nugent's third solo studio album and arguably the most cohesive statement from his classic lineup. The album cemented his reputation as a guitar hero focused on high-energy, guitar-driven hard rock with a primal, raw, and unapologetically sexual attitude.
-
Guitar Prowess: The album is dominated by Nugent's signature sound: a screeching, feedback-heavy, and aggressive guitar tone, characterized by furious, often chaotic, soloing and powerful riff construction.
-
The Classic Band: This album marked the return of the original band lineup that recorded the debut: Derek St. Holmes (principal lead vocals/rhythm guitar), Rob Grange (bass), and Cliff Davies (drums). St. Holmes' powerful, melodic vocals provided a critical balance to Nugent's own gravelly voice and wild stage persona. This was the last studio album to feature bassist Rob Grange.
-
Production: Recorded in New York and London, the production is raw and loud, capturing the intensity of Nugent’s famous live performances (which were later immortalized on Double Live Gonzo!).
Track-by-Track Highlights
The LP contains 10 tracks, split across two sides:
Side One: The Hits & The Hooks-
"Cat Scratch Fever": The album's signature track and Nugent's most famous song and biggest single hit. It’s an infectious, riff-driven piece of classic arena rock known for its raw energy and controversial lyrics (allegedly an ode to an STD, but also a metaphor for lust and intensity).
-
"Wang Dang Sweet Poontang": A notoriously bawdy and aggressive rocker, often introduced in concert with one of Nugent's famous, rambling stage rants. It epitomizes the "Motor City Madman" persona.
-
"Death By Misadventure": A track that showcases the band's tightness, with some sources suggesting its lyrics are a commentary on the death of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones.
-
"Home Bound" (Instrumental): A surprising instrumental on Side A, featuring more melodic and harmonized guitar work, proving Nugent could be more than just raw noise. This track was famously sampled by the Beastie Boys on their 1992 album Check Your Head (for "The Biz vs. the Nuge").
-
"Workin' Hard, Playin' Hard": A prime example of the band’s hard rock groove, demonstrating the full-throttle lifestyle that Nugent advocated (without the drugs and alcohol, as he is famously straight-edge).
-
"A Thousand Knives": A track praised for its strong riffs and more intricate song structure, demonstrating the album's overall high quality beyond the famous singles.
-
"Fist Fightin' Son of a Gun": A straightforward, Chuck Berry-inspired rock 'n' roll blast that maintains the album's high-energy pace.
-
"Out of Control": The closing track that summarizes the album's overall theme of untamed, visceral rock and roll power.
