BA-ROCK (8/1972) MEXICAN EDITON LP PEERLESS M-1692 “A" 1973
LISTING: STORIES / BLACK TRAIN / MRS. VIRGIN / FRANK SUPPER / SCARLETT HORSES / IT'S A PITY / THOUGHT / PARADISE
LOTHAR SIEMS (GUITAR, VOCALS), WALTER QUINTUS (VIOLIN, PIANO, ORGAN), THOMAS OLIVER (DRUMS, VOCALS), WALTER VON SEYDLITZ (CELLO), + MATTHIAS MÜLLER-MENCKENS (FLUTE, PIANO, ORGAN), HARALD KONIETZKO (BASS, VOCALS), HANS LAMPE (PERCUSSION)
ORIGINATING IN 1965 FROM THE BREMEN BAND THE CHAMBERLAINS (WITH SINGER/GUITARIST LOTHAR SIEMS AND DRUMMER THOMAS OLIVIER), IN 1967 THEY JOINED UP WITH MULTI-INSTRUMENTAL TALENT WALTER QUINTUS, AND WENT ON TO TOUR FRANCE UNDER THE GUISE OF "SIEMS/QUINTUS/OLIVIER". QUINTUS WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED CLASSICALLY TRAINED MUSICIAN, A SOUND EXPLORER WHO HAD TRIED HIS HAND AT MANY THINGS. IN 1969, AFTER GRADUATING MUSICAL STUDIES AT THE BEAZZIC CONSERVATORY THEY RE-BAPTISED THE BAND PARZIVAL, AFTER THE FOLKLORE LEGEND.
SEEKING INTERNATIONAL FAME, MARCH 1970 SAW THEM IN THE LONDON DECCA STUDIOS RECORDING THEIR DEBUT SINGLE. TAKEN UNDER THE WING OF PRODUCER CONNY PLANK THEY EMBARKED ON THEIR FIRST ALBUM IN AUTUMN 1971. THEIR MIXTURE OF POP, AVANT-GARDE, CLASSICAL AND MEDIEVAL MUSICS WAS PRAISED AS "A STRANGE SOUND WORLD OF MYSTERIOUS BREATH" (POP MAGAZINE), THIS WAS NO DOUBT DUE TO THEIR UNUSUALLY RICH INSTRUMENTATION AND ROCK AESTHETICS, UNUSUAL IN SUCH A COMBINATION OF MUSICS.
LEGEND CONTAINED A WIDE RANGE OF STYLES, PARTICULARLY HYBRIDS OF POP AND CLASSICAL THAT COMPARE TO THE MOVE (CIRCA LOOKIN' ON) AND OTHER UNIQUE COMBINATIONS DUE TO THE USE OF OLD GERMAN CULTURE IN A MODERN ROCK CONTEXT. PARTICULARLY EXCITING WERE THE TWO LENGTHY MANTRIC EXCURSIONS CO-COMPOSED WITH CONNY PLANK, CLOSE TO THE STYLE OF THE THIRD EAR BAND OR RADIO NOISZ ENSEMBLE, BUT WITH THE INVENTION OF LIMBUS OR ANIMA.
THE LATER ALBUM BA-ROCK (THE TITLE IS A PLAY ON WORDS), WAS A GOOD DEAL LESS CONSISTENT. THIS COULD BE DOWN TO WALTER VON SEYDLITZ (WHO JOINED IN THE SPRING 1972) PUSHING THE MUSIC MORE IN THE DIRECTION OF THE ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA. IT COMBINED BOTH THE BAROQUE AND ROCK ON A MORE COMMERCIAL LEVEL, AND THUS BEING MORE SONG BASED WAS FAR LESS EXCITING.

GOOD (US version of this term: VG): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits etc.
