 /||\ A quintet recorded October 1956 w/ Ira Sullivan (tp), Monterose (ts), Horace Silver (p), Wilbur Ware (b) & Philly Joe Jones (d) playing Donald Byrd’s The Third, Philly’s Ka-Link; Beauteous by Paul Chambers and 3 Monterose originals.

 

/// As a leader on perhaps only 4-5 precious sessions from this general period, J. R. is one of jazz record collectors’ favorites, and certainly one of the most famous “under-rated/under-recorded” jazz musicians of his time. A truly original stylist with just a touch of Rollins, he earned the respect of some of the greatest of his peers (e.g. Charles Mingus, Art Blakey, Kenny Dorham, George Wallington, Tommy Flanagan & Oscar Pettiford).

[** Note on this issue: during a period in the 1970’s Blue Note / United Artists pressed special runs of certain Blue Note titles, mostly 1500 series, for export to Japan. Obviously, before King or Toshiba got their own reissue programs up and running. A few hundred (or more) of these titles were diverted into the domestic market as “cut-outs” or manufacturer “overruns” – almost always a corner was clipped. This is a rare copy of one of these U.A. issues without a clip.]  ||
