As a torchbearer of metal, DEVILDRIVER have never let themselves be dissuaded from their uncompromising art and tireless touring in the last two decades. Under the leadership of the legendary Dez Fafara, the Californian crew built their reputation as one of the most self-sacrificing bands in the world and released a number of distinctive, brutal albums. Contrary to all short-lived trends, the focus of the troupe has always remained purposeful, and their energy has never been so bundled as on the two-part album Dealing With Demons, which is an uncompromising mixture of jagged riffs, focused teamwork and rousing deep lyrics. According to Dez, this follow-up to Trust No One (2016) is the last exorcism of his demons, who have accompanied DEVILDRIVER's music for a long time. Although Metal has always been known as a drain valve, DEVILDRIVER show once again that they took the concept of the Karthasis to heart. Dealing With Demons shows the band - now consisting of Dez, guitarists Mike Spreitzer and Neal Tiemann, drummer Austin D'Amond and bassist Diego Ibarra - at a new zenith and delivers the band's hitherto most ruthless material, which nevertheless has a strong glimmer of hope brings with it and presents belief in a better future.
From the threatening intro of the explosive opener “Keep Away From Me” to the seething “Nest Of Vipers” and “Iona”, Dealing With Demons I is the first part of a two-part album series. Although long-time fans of the band won't be disappointed and will find the band's classic sound again here, DEVILDRIVER strictly avoided going the most obvious route and also found new ways on this new record to get the blood of their fan base boiling. With new milestones like Dez's captivating vocals on “Wishing”, and “Nest Of Vipers”, on which Dez wrote his lyrics for the first time together with Neal Tiemann, Dealing With Demons I delivers its usual brutality, but also kicks off some new ones Doors open, and it turns out to be a cleansing for the band, which is now ready for a courageous restart. The demons are now a thing of the past. And the future holds many new possibilities open.
