GRAMOPHONE REVIEW FROM 1961 (edited for length)

It is sad that there seems to be nothing of great importance still to come from Beecham. However, a collection of charmers, some a bit out of the way, is at least something to give pleasure, especially when played with the style they are given here.

The great thing about Beecham's conducting of such pieces as the dances from Samson and Delilah is that he enjoyed himself so enormously (where many conductors would conduct just efficiently, as a job) and, of course, he had an unbounded ability to make his players enjoy themselves too.

Beecham's genius for dealing with music of this sort is greatly in evidence in this collection and the record provides the most delightful relaxation.

The R.P.O. is in superb form and every performance is distinguished.

The zest and wonderful rhythm of the Tchaikovsky waltz, the glow of the strings in the Debussy, the style of the Menuet des Follets, the moving Mozart: these stand out especially in my memory for the really exceptional pleasure they gave me.

The stereophonic sound is realistic and notably spacious.

This is altogether an enchanting collection and it is also well arranged as a programme, so that one can listen happily, continuously if one wants.

CONDITION:

Disc: This copy has previously belonged to an Academic college library.

BUT

It appears never to have been played.

No hairlines

No spindle marks.

No signs of handling.

No imperfections of any kind.

Just a deep velvety rainbow sheen only seen on an unplayed record.

I have no hesitation in describing this record as MINT!

Looks as if it was made yesterday!

Sleeve:

The rear upper left hand corner bears the same ownership stamp as the label.

OTHERWISE

Apart from one small nick in the front open edge, the sleeve looks and feels brand new.

Bright stiff new look to the sleeve which looks as if it was made last week!

The front glazed finish looks absolutely Brand New,

rather than nearly 50 years old!.

Spine perfect

Rear also looks brand new, fresh and clean.

No wear to any other edges.

Corners fine.

Overall astonishing, near-mint condition.

POSTAGE

(A NOTE ABOUT UK POSTAGE)

I use a strong purpose made mailing envelope to send LPs.

These cost about £0.40p each.

I remove the disc from its sleeve to avoid seam splits resulting from movement in the post.

I pack the disc in a poly liner and then insert two stiff cardboard squares to stiffen the package to avoid damage in the post.

The package now costs £2.51p to post within the UK.

Add in the 40p for the mailing envelope and you will see that 9 pence is left over for my time and a certain amount of parcel tape!

UK: £3

EU/SCANDINAVIA: £5

USA:  £6

REST OF WORLD: £7
