LOUDEST WHISPER – Hard Times ORIG Fiona LP / FIONA 011 ( IRELAND, Stereo, 1982)

Happy to present an original Irish press of the 3rd LP from this super-talented, criminally overlooked band. Their classic ‘Children Of Lir’ remains hugely sought after but this LP shows that they continued to produce highly skilled songs of great depth and maturity. It is offered with its original paper insert.

The single format, non-laminated sleeve is solid but not perfect. Main areas of use are 3 or 4 heavy handling creases to the front right and a similar corner crease to the front bottom right and 2 1cm tears to the opening edges front and back. Other than these it’s strong with only light corner rubs, light rubbing to the top and bottom edges, some yellowing to the rear panel (no creases here) and a little smudge to the front right. There’s NO splits, writing or tape and the opening edges are still pretty sharp. Overall an honest VG (Very Good) – all in one piece and still pleasing.

The very thin, fragile paper insert has no major problems. Just some slight foxing spots and soft handling creases to the left hand side. No writing.

The original Fiona labels have no writing or stickers. Just some ultra small age spots and light to moderate spindle evidence around the centre hole.

The light to medium-weight vinyl HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays very well indeed. Visually there are 2 prominent marks to Side 1- a non sounding scuff to track 3 and a slightly feelable scratch to the end of track 1 into the dead wax between songs. Be aware that this causes approx. 2 dozen repeated clicks. Other than that there is not much to fault the audio on these brilliant songs. Visually comes in at VG (Very Good) with some fine light scuffs and small hairlines but except for the said scratch patch, plays more EX with only light dust static (not crackle) and the occasional light tick. A great listen!

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
