The Lost Souls – This Life of Mine 7” (orig. Australia Sunshine MONO QK-1469)

Release date: September 1966.

On offer here is an ULTRA RARE original issue of the only 7” single by Melbourne-based group, THE LOST SOULS.  Their lead guitarist BILL PUTT subsequently joined Aussie progressive rock band SPECTRUM.

Formed in Melbourne, Australia, in 1965, THE LOST SOULS consisted of Rob Woff (lead vocals), Terry Paul (guitar), Bill Putt (guitar), Les Wilkins (bass), and Alan Gregory (drums).  They got together right out of high school, enamoured of the bluesier side of the British beat boom, especially THE ROLLING STONES, THE ANIMALS, and THE PRETTY THINGS, and won a local battle-of-the-bands competition, which got them a shot at a single on the Sunshine label.  The resulting record "This Life of Mine" was heavily influenced by THE ANIMALS, both in Woff's vocal performance and its pounding beat, while the fuzz-laden guitar called to mind THE PRETTY THINGS at their raunchiest, and the whole record rivalled THE WHO for ballsiness.  It became a local hit but it was as far as the group got, in terms of leaving any lasting mark.  They broke up three years later, unknown outside of their region of Australia.  In 2001, Rhino Records resurrected the angst-laden punk complaint "This Life of Mine" as part of Nuggets II.

visual: FAIR : beautiful glossy sheen despite NUMEROUS scuffs & scratches, which are superficial for the most part (heavier scratch can be felt through mid-section of “This Life of Mine“).  A GAP-FILLER UNTIL A BETTER COPY TURNS UP – IMPOSSIBLY RARE IN ANY CONDITION - GOOD LUCK TRYING TO FIND ANOTHER!

audible: PUNCHY and VIBRANT SOUND despite some minimal underlying surface noise.  “This Life of Mine“ - light intermittent clicks (definitely not constant) from 1:00 to 2:20 as stylus passes over (music still dominates!), therefore VG- overall / “Peace of Mind“ - sounds impressive despite 3-4 insignificant pops, therefore VG++.  THE GREAT NEWS IS THAT THIS 45 PLAYS THROUGH WITHOUT ANY JUMPS OR SKIPS.  IN FACT, THE B-SIDE SOUNDS HOT!
