There are more than a few reasons for putting it out there that this LP, Richards first, is the greatest LP of the rock’n’roll era. As I see it, the main reason is the effect it had on his contemporaries and musicians right up until the present day. Richards vocal style has become the defining style of rock singing over the years. This and his songs had a profound influence on the young Presley who recorded four of Richards compositions on his first two RCA LP’s and seems to have altered his vocal style to accommodate what Richard had done. During the Sun Sessions there’s rarely a hint of Richard’s rough/gutbucket/etc delivery (on rock numbers he preferred the “hot potatoes in the mouth style”) After the release of Richard’s album he goes vocally rougher. Think of Hard Headed Woman/Jailhouse Rock/One Night/covers of Richards songs etc etc. Richard’s gutbucket style influenced early Lennon and McCartney (especially the latter), Otis Redding (an early professional Richard imitator) Wilson Pickett, Ray Charles, Fogarty, Bob Seger Robert Plant etc. The list is endless and includes, in Australia, Bon Scott and Jimmy Barnes. Sure Richard didn’t invent gutbucket vocal style –he got it from the blues- but he was about the first to rock it up and definitely the first to give it international exposure beginning on this record. But greatest album? I hear you say, What about -for example, the influence of Chuck Berry’s songs beginning with his first album? Granted Berry’s songs were everywhere in the fifties and sixties but by the mid seventies were not so prevalent. Or what about Richard’s second album with Miss Molly etc? The second album, fine as it is, has weaknesses (eg By the Light of the Silvery Moon). This one has no weaknesses. It’s perfect. The greatest album of the rock’n’roll era.
