SUPER RARE ORIGINAL small label local pressing from 1977 - the Leopards "Kansas City Slickers" on the Moon label. Sure, it was released in 1977, but looks and feels ten years earlier (at least). Much has been written about the Leopards similarity to the late 60s Kinks, so much so that some even consider this a kind of tribute album to Ray Davies. Truth is, they're right. This really DOES sound like a vintage Kinks album, and the lead singer sounds uncannily like Ray Davies. Which is fine with me. Thing is, it bounces around stylistically through the various sounds and eras of the Kinks, so it comes off sounding more like Kinks Kronikles than, say, Village Green or Kinda Kinks. Here's the way I hear it - "Road to Jamaica" sounds just like 1969 Kinks circa "Arthur" (not, as the title would suggest, a "Holiday in Waikiki" soundalike)..."Mind of My Own" fuses "David Watts" with "Mr. Pleasant" for a bouncy and catchy slice of '66 Kinks..."Dancing in the Snow" could be any of the '66-67 old-timey music hall Kinks rave-ups, with its barrelhouse piano and good-timey pub singalong feel...and "Recess" is catchy "Face to Face" era Kinks. This is not to imply that the Leopards are the Rutles of the Kinks. I'm sure these kids didn't set out to make such an obvious tribute, otherwise they would've called themselves the Konks or Deathray Davies or something. But it can't be overlooked. And if you close your eyes, it might just be one of the best lost Kinks albums you've heard in a long time. Original 1977 pressing on the Moon label. Cover in VG+ shape with some edge wear and a 2-inch seam split along the bottom. Vinyl plays VG+.
