The Most Influential Advocate of Western Music in Japan

The great Ukranian pianist Leo Sirota playing Gavotte (Gluck-Brahms) / Berceuse (Tchaikovsky-Pabst). Leo Sirota was born in 1885 in Kamyanets-Podilsky, Ukraine and received most of his training from Busoni in Vienna. He settled in Japan in 1929, staying there for 16 years, teaching and giving recitals, and thus became the most influential proponent of Western music in Japan and it is due to him that most pianists from Japan received such good training. He wanted to encourage the Japanese in all their endeavors to promote Western music, including the manufacturing of pianos. He was the first to play a Yamaha piano in public, against the prevailing fashion in Japan for Bechstein and Steinway instruments – Very rare UK 12”, 78 rpm record on Homochord HB-2137. Matrix numbers: T5159/60 – Label Condition: VG++ / Record Condition: VG+/VG++ (some light surface rubbing marks/hairlines, a couple of scratches).
