The one thing I can't help but notice about Time and Place is just what a guitar-heavy album it is, abnormally so for a soul album. Most of the tracks use the lead guitar for the purpose it's literally named after - leading the rest of the band into the track - and some of them use it as the primary rhythmic instrument, rather than the kind of stabbed interjections more typical to the genre (see "Time and Place", which boasts a honest-to-goodness classic rock guitar riff).

Now, if you couple that with the choice of covers here - "California Dreaming" and "Hey Joe", both originally made popular by '60s rock acts, as well as "Day Tripper" on the CD issue bonus tracks - I start to get a little bit cynical. It seems that, of the people who are most vocal about proclaiming this to be a lost classic of Southern soul, a disproportionate number are from rockist backgrounds, be they MOJO and Rolling Stone writers (the former once referred to this as 'the holy grail of soul', whatever that means - an assertion repeated by AMG), or certain RYM and Sputnik members and Amazon reviewers; it almost makes me look at this sneeringly and damningly as the soul album it's okay for U2 fans to like.

It's a harsh assessment, obviously - Moses was just showing off his ability as a guitarist like anybody in the same situation would, while the songs he covered are hardly alien to soul music (see Eddie Hazel's version of "California Dreaming" and Otis Redding's version of "Day Tripper" - and Hendrix was hardly a million miles away from soul himself), and his music rarely strays from typical Southern soul territory, despite the slight shift in instrumentation. What convinces me to change my mind entirely, though, is Moses' voice. Man, that thing is gutteral. He can sing smooth and slow when we wants, no doubt about that, but when he reaches right to the outer range of his voice he seems to be singing from some other place entirely; think Otis Redding, but two-fold. It's a seriously potent weapon, and one that surely any soul fan can appreciate.

So once the cynicism brushes away, Time and Place reveals itself as a truly great album, one that places Moses alongside the likes of James Carr and William Bell as under-appreciated soul giants who sadly only have one true album that shows off their talents. This is just as good as You Got My Mind Messed Up and Soul of a Bell - and that's high praise.
