Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean, fresh and attractive, I am struggling to find a single spindle trace at all. This another from an audiophile’s collection of barely played records.

Cat Number: SSK 59402.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 105 grams Not the heaviest record I have ever held, but fear not, this copy plays beautifully with nothing unwanted, and is a typical weight for this album.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Not as easy to find as you may think, this was the lowest selling album in their catalogue and most found will be later non-UK pressings inside horribly grubby covers. This set is in fantastic condition, the record looks and plays like brand new and the cover clean and strong. This one also a much rarer A1 / B1 pressing and the owner kept the title sticker that was on the cellophane wrapping. This has been placed on the inner sleeve as seen on my pictures.

Brief Info: Led Zeppelin’s seventh album, issued at the height of their popularity but this title did not capture the public’s imagination quite as well as anticipated. Although quite well received by critics, this remains the lowest selling title within their catalogue and is never easy to find in top conditions. This has a lovely clean cover and a much rarer A1 / B1, barely played record. Also the original wrap sticker that promoted the album from the shrinkwrap – many of these were simply discarded. The owner attached this to the inner sleeve for safe-keeping, and this inner is unsplit. Designed by Hipgnosis, the gatefold cover gives no text details whatsoever about tracks or band details, they are on the inner sleeve. For fans needing this title, it will prove immensely difficult to find better. Barely played first issue Led Zeppelin albums are beyond difficult to find, and this one is no exception – just exceptional.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): only marked down a fraction because it is very slightly darkened inside. An unlaminated gatefold format with embossed title on the front and logo on the back. Matt finished and smooth bar the embossed details. Printed and made in England. Includes inner and elusive original sticker (seen in close-up).

Cover Front: Barely anything to fault, any traces of grubbiness or creasing are minuscule and faint. Barely marked with no sticker issues or rubbing, a difficult front in great condition.

Cover Back: Almost the same, a tiny tip crease on the top right, this being quite critical too. Almost no hint of any record impression and certainly no ring wear.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The merest hint of darkening near the centre hinge fold, little else.

Top Edges: All unworn, still clean and very straight.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, any traces or rubbing or marks are tiny, few and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear at all and both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on the back edge. One tiny tone spot on the front seen viewed end-on (this being beyond critical).

Spine and Text: Practically as made: solid, thick and robust. Very straight, uncompressed and folded square, all edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, any hints of grubbiness to the white surface are tiny, they seldom get much better than this.

Corners: A tiny rub hint on the back of the spine top, little else to fault elsewhere and all retain near perfect shape.

Cover Summary: An top quality all-round example of this delicate and unforgiving mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This attractive item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): an unlined inner with the original shrinkwrap sticker applied for safe-keeping. Most of these were discarded and are not seen too often now. A gentle trace of discolouration to the right side of the sticker, but little else. One of the few I have seen with no edge splits but a little gentle toning spotting is seen up close, the only reason the grading has been slightly lowered. No creasing or repairs and overall, this has stood the test-of-time well. Printed and made in England as confirmed by the imprint at the bottom of one side.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface trace marks tiny, very few and faint as seen with critical viewin under angled light. Very clean, shiny, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. With anticipation of huge sales based on prior issues, this was probably pressed in considerable numbers and most were quite lightweight pressings. I am certain this is my very first A1 / B1 pressing, most being either A2 and B2, and equally, finding one barely played and sounding so marvellous are all factors for a rarer copy. Visually a very impressive record that should again please most collectors and LZ fans.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is top-drawer with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. No surface sounds or pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing that simply plays beautifully. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this beautifully preserved record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
