DETAILSLed Zeppelin II is usually remembered for two things: unoriginality and being one of the loudest albums ever released. Although those may seem to detract from Led Zeppelin II, they actually improve the album, elevating it to a legendary status as one of the greatest albums ever released.
It's important to acknowledge the level at which Led Zeppelin borrow from other artists on this album - hardly a song goes by without something stolen from someone else. But Led Zeppelin were hardly your local cover band, content on ruining anything they touch. In fact, part of the success of Led Zeppelin II comes from the band's uncanny ability to make these songs their own. "Whole Lotta Love" takes the lyrics of Muddy Waters' "You Need Love" and sticks it on a riff so tough it could withstand an atomic bomb. "Moby Dick" takes the riff of the Bobby Parker song "Watch Your Step" and turns it up to 11, with a frantic drum solo that only gets better with each listen.
Of course, this knack for making improvements on older songs wouldn't have been possible without Led Zeppelin's musical talent, and there is no better album to display said talent than Led Zeppelin II. Each musician gets his chance to shine, whether it's the frenzied soloing of "Heartbreaker", the flawless bass line on "The Lemon Song", the drum solo on "Moby Dick", or the anarchic screams and moans during the middle of "Whole Lotta Love".
But the absolute MOST important thing about Led Zeppelin II is just how consistent it is. There isn't a bad song on the album, with each track taking heavy electric blues in a new groundbreaking fashion. Led Zeppelin II is ear-splitting yet never boring. It's plagiaristic yet never sounds wrong.
It's a hundred-and-ten-percent perfect, with not a second of wasted time. Few bands can make that claim, and few bands have ever made a record as brilliant as Led Zeppelin II.
