Label/Format: Apple – sides 1 to 4 have the orange coloured format as seen on the first label scan. Sides 5 and 6 have a customised format.

Label Conditions: All the labels shows hardly any spindle marks at all, bar side two that has only a light few. All fresh, clean and attractive and devoid of dulling or ageing. Superb rich vibrant colour retained and without doubt these records have been played little and offer fantastic clean sound.

Cat Number: STCH 639.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 140, 138, 136 grams. All very good weights for this early copy.

Rarity: Moderate, this was a popular album and for a box set especially, it sold well. But there is a significant factor here. This one includes a BRITISH-MADE Box AND Poster, only the second ‘Printed in Great Britain’ poster I have seen. US-made versions are considered standard by most and true British copies are incredibly rare with few even being made – I have yet to find them. The box depth is much deep and thicker than the US version and the bottom tray is bare pale grey, NOT orange – the orange lid is the same for both. The back is textured too with a leather-like finish, the US version is much smoother – I hope my picture shows this lovely detail. This copy included a made-to-measure cardboard insert that bulks out the package to stop movement and lessen the risk of the box getting flattened. This card insert is white one side and plain cardboard on the other and this IS also included. Many would have discarded this card spacer, hence finding the original is far from easy. The records are UK pressed and ALL the matrixes end in -1U, hence first pressings. Also with VERY early mothers and stampers, it seemed a lottery what came with what. The giant poster is unmounted, that quite unsual as well and only my second one printed here in the UK. This is near perfect bar a small split on the top edge on the fold, this neat and with minimal visible attraction. British made boxes and poster are rare, make no mistake, these were very short run items before being contracted out to the American manufacturer, probably due to cost and the format totally changed. Now mention must be made of the fragility of the box hinge which was woefully under-strength and inadequate for the job of long-term opening and closing. Both UK and US lids used the same fragile thin-tape format for the hinge and few survive intact. This one has I am glad to say HAS, but any winning bidder, please open with utmost care and sparingly, as these sheer off so easily. All the records play beautifully all the inners are fully intact – the grey one had a tiny central bottom edge central split which I have neatly repaired to stop the risk of it widening. You would barely even know it was even there. Overall, a very fine copy with one of the very best UK-made boxes I have yet seen.

Brief Info: Harrison’s 1970 triple album that for me is by far the best post-Beatles album he ever made by some considerable distance. Including material dating back to the mid-Beatles era, there are some real gems included here including the famous ‘My Sweet Lord’. Sides one to four are typical Harrison songs, while the last disc has lengthy jam instrumentals featuring a host of super-star musicians. Most interested people reading this will know all about this album already, I prefer to explain more of what is available and it’s condition – but hasten to add – this is a MUCH rarer near complete UK example with very early mother and stamper codes – these being the lowest I have seen. I have never seen UK inner sleeves.

This Album’s Potential for Wear: Very High: these lavish boxed sets are rarely seen devoid of major damage or severe wear. These and similar items are often totally flat with all sides and corners broken or at least creased. As stated above, the ridicuously thin hinge tape rarely survives intact and this is still in one piece with NO repairs. If this does split off, it would be impossible to repair anyway.

What This Set Includes: UK Made Box – 3 EMI very early pressed, low mother and stamper code records – 3 US Made Inners – UK Made Unmounted Poster – The Card Inner Box Spacer.

Box Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a grading put into context of compared to many seen – most of which are American. This rare ‘Printed and Made in Great Britain’ original is deeper than US versions and have a non-orange tray interior. This has only mild traces of ageing overall with ultra faint toning traces seen on the spine edge of the front and even lesser so on the top. There merest hint of a sticker mark near the top right corner, but look very hard, also a tiny scuff near the bottom right corner, again so small, the eye is barely even drawn to it. The textured underside of the bottom tray is immaculate, unscuffed and barely even marked, the textured detail looks fantastic. The inside areas are all little short of as made (please see the rare GB imprint in close-up). What sets this apart still further is ALL corners are strong, upright and erect with NO splits or repairs, no weakening or damage and when close, still hug the inner tray sides tightly with minimal traces of ‘sag’. The same for the actual edges which are uncreased and solidly straight and robust. So this box is totally uncrushed or weakened and totally repair free – this I checked very closely and I am 100% certain all is made. One small blemish on the spine: the three digits of the catalogue number are a little faded, but still can be read with ease, the final ‘9’ being the most affected. Lastly, but never least, the ultra fragle tape hinge is fully intact and still strong, or as strong as they realistically get. But extreme care is needed when opening and closing the lid. Unless perfection is mandatory, this hugely collectable UK original box will please many, if not most collectors and will prove immensely difficult to find much better.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): the three coloured, slightly textured inners all UA-made (as per most). These were never lined, hence VERY prone to edge splits and I am sure many would have been from new due to movement. Only one tiny edge split on the grey one, on the bottom which I very neatly repaired to elminate risk of it widening, but I would strongly suggest not to store the records inside these anyway. I always provide brand new soft lined inners with all my records and do so here. The small repair practically invisible and I have seldom seen these inners so neatly intact. Minimal creasing, clean and fresh with minimal thickening or usage evidene to the recessed top openings. Being so fragile, I consider these to be in exceptional condition, few will better these I feel sure.

The ‘Spacer’ Card Insert: Practically Mint as made – hardly exciting being a piece of corrugated card that help fill the extra space of the UK-made box. Standard US ones were shallower and did not include this spacer. An often overlooked part of this British-made set, and so often missing altogether. This is plain cardboard one side and white the other, this has no creasing or dinks and looks like new.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(++): and only marked down for a small, very neat split on the top edge on the manufacture fold. UNMOUNTED, yes true, this giant poster has survived the years in lovely condition and has not been wall-mounted. Thus, no pin-holes or tape marks or other ‘damage’ of any kind. Unfaded with all the folds strong (bar the one small split, approx 1 inch) and folded squarely. Crisp edges and a clean back, few will survive without the nicks on the edge. The heavily bearded Harrison looks kinda spooky on this classic poster which is guaranteed UK printed as seen on my close-up picture. The American imprint seen to it’s left tipped-out prior to the new British printing plate being made. UK posters, even rarer than the UK boxes, as many were mounted, torn down and discarded, any unmounted example this clean and fresh is very rare indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading:

DISC 1: EXCELLENT: a few light surface marks with no sound.

DISC 2: EXCELLENT: pretty much the same again, a few tiny pressing spots on side four and odd hairline, any visible blemishes again have no sound.

DISC 3: MINT(-): looks hardly even played with barely any blemishes at all.

A very clean, and very early pressed visual set that are very clean with fine lustre and shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. No doubts, very little played and offering top sound for all. Visually impressive records, all with -1U matrix endings, and two (more unusually) with ‘1’ mothers and very low single letter stampers. They should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: All three records play above their respective visual gradings with little short of audiophile sound quality with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and these are exceptional clean pressings and made at a time where quality mattered by a great label. Few copies will match let alone outperform these early pressings I feel sure for crisp, clean and fully focused sound. Pressed by EMI and these were usually very reliable, all six sides have no inherent crackle or pressing noises and nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these quality records. With an intact, very good looking Great Britain-made box, very neat inners and an unmounted UK poster, this set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: This is a lovely set and always better to have this famed British artist with predominately British packing and early pressings. An intact box with little wear and only mild ageing, these are truly at a premium. Unmounted UK posters are possibly rarer still and although the inners are American (as per most), they are (almost naturally) intact, that also rare. One of the toughest Apple albums to find as such and a giant of an album that many regard as a classic. Do not lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
