LED ZEPPELIN IV
White Label Test Pressing Vinyl Album
This auction is for an authentic 12 inch vinyl record that is a ‘White Label - Test Pressing’ of Led Zeppelin IV released in 1971.
I have owned this rare item since 1971, I bought it from a trader prior to the official release of what was the ‘Four Symbols’ album, more commonly known as Led Zeppelin IV, and what was to become their most celebrated recording and one of the biggest-selling albums in history.
Although the record is 38 years old and has been played by me many times the audible quality still sounds great and the recording mix has a particularly loud almost ‘live’ feel, and in my opinion is far superior to the sound on the later compact disc version. The grading of the record, in accordance with the UK Standard Guidelines, is somewhere between ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’.
On Side ‘A’ of the record in the run-off groove (dead-wax) portion of the disc is the catalogue number: 2401012 A //2 1 1 1 and also the name ‘Pecko Duck’ is etched.
On Side ‘B’ of the record in the run-off groove portion of the disc is the catalogue number: 2401012 B //2 1 1 1 and also the name ‘Porky’ is etched.
The names ‘Pecko Duck’ and ‘Porky’ are both aliases of George Peckham who is widely recognised as one of the most accomplished mastering / cutting engineers in the business. He has been responsible for producing the master discs from which vinyl records have been pressed over the last 40 years including Zeppelin, Genesis and The Beatles. His master discs and the records produced from them, are known widely as ‘Porky Prime Cuts’.
The White Label has original hand writing (in blue ink) on both sides of the record and is also marked ‘BD Records’ - not sure what this stands for (Black Dog possibly). The sides have however been labelled incorrectly as side ‘A’ is listed as side ‘2’ and side ‘B’ is listed as Side ‘1’. I do not know who was responsible for the handwriting and other graphics on the label.
When bought this album was supplied without an outer sleeve, presumably as it was in the process of being designed. However it did come with an inner sleeve which was and still is in a really poor condition – refer to photographs - not sure if this was the finished design although interestingly the Robert Plant feather logo has been coloured red.
I have never seen another one of these like this listed on ebay!!
