Origins & Continental Impact Jimmy Contreras (born in 1940 in Cartago, Valle del Cauca, Colombia) is a fundamental singer and composer to understand the expansion of Afro-Antillean rhythms and the Boogaloo phenomenon in Latin America during the 1960s. Although of Colombian origin, his career is a true continental journey that led him to be crowned "King of Boogaloo" in Ecuador and to leave an indelible mark on the musical scenes of Mexico, Venezuela, and Central America. Career & Style Beginnings: He recorded his first song, the bolero "Viajera", in 1962. Despite his Colombian roots, his vocal style adapted quickly to rumba, salsa, and especially Boogaloo.The "Yo Traigo el Boogaloo" Phenomenon: In the late 60s, leading his group Jimmy Contreras and His Latin Combo, he released productions that are now cult objects for vinyl collectors, standing out for a raw sound with percussive pianos and bright brass arrangements. Rhythmic Versatility Throughout his discography under labels such as Onix (Ecuador), Dideca (Guatemala), and Vik/RCA (Mexico), he performed everything from Guaguancó and Salsa to adaptations of pop songs of the era in Cha Cha Chá rhythm (such as "La enamorada de un amigo mío").
