We still don't know how to characterize this African-American proto-rap poetry album: this is part empowerment rap, part stream-of-consciousness rant, part Black-Power rebel yell, part voodoo chant, part beat poetry, part spoken word, part urban worksong, part jungle drums and part sheer madness of the seventies. If you wish to understand the power of the Black Radical movement  of the seventies, start here, for nothing - and we mean: NOTHING - else will do. Finding a still sealed original copy?!?! Forget it – not even a HOPE!!! This may be the last one you will ever see.

In 1968, Philip Meister (1932-1982) and Elaine Sulka (1933-1994) opened the Cubiculo Theatre in a Hell's Kitchen brownstone in New York City (where this recording by the Last Poets was made in May 1968). Meister and Sulka, who were married, co-founded the National Shakespeare Company in 1962, a touring troupe that presented plays at schools and universities across the country. The Cubiculo served as a home for the National Shakespeare Company as well as an off-off Broadway experimental theater. Meister named the theater after a line from Shakespeare's play Twelfth Night and also as a reference to the cubical shape of the theater. Meister and Sulka ran "The Cube," as it was known, as a nonprofit with the help of John T. Dudich and then Maurice Edwards, who served as program coordinators. Programming included experimental plays, films, music, poetry, choreography, dance, and mixed media performances. They billed The Cube as a showcase theater, a place where artists could try out new ideas and works in an atmosphere that encouraged creativity and growth. The spaces, a seventy-five seat theater and a studio theater, were given to artists rent-free with promotion and lighting included. The Cubiculo fostered the careers of many artists including playwright Israel Horovitz. In 1969 the Cubiculo was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and later one from the New York States Arts Council. Philip Meister died in 1982 and Elaine Sulka continued to run the theater until her death in 1994.

(b)          The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

COVER IS NEAR MINT, STILL SEALED AND COVERED IN ITS ORIGINAL ►SHRINK WRAP   (A SMALL PIECE OF SHRINK WRAP IS MISSING)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the top seam.

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
