Comments: The Last Poets (who took their name from a poem by South African poet Willie Kgositsile) used the term "Jazzoetry" to describe their own syncopated style of politicized, jazz-laced spoken word, unwittingly laying the groundwork for the entire hip hop genre. The group used their hard-hitting proto-rap verses to teach solidarity and condemn America's inherent racism, a position that earned them FBI surveillance.
