I feel like the time 1977 rolled around Johnny Winter decided he was finally going to make the album he always wanted to make. A no frills, nuthin' but the blooze kind of album. One that fully realized all his early influences.

Don't get me wrong, Nothin' But The Blues still rocks pretty hard in places, like the opener 'Tired Of Tryin' and 'Mad Blues' but what we have here isn't really blues rock. No, this is just straight up blues no matter how you slice it.

As per usual the guitar work on display here from Mr. Winter is out of this world. Especially his acoustic steel guitar work. It's something I've always wished he did more on his albums, and here there is some of his finest. I must also add that Nothin' But The Blues' contains Johnny's finest slide work ever. His playing on 'TV Mama' just destroys his playing on 'Highway 61 Revisited' from Second Winter.

Now Johnny's vocals have always been considered and acquired taste. Well that may be true, but it's totally a taste worth acquiring. But here we find the man not pushing the limits of his range, but with a more subdued tone, and it works absolutely perfectly with the slow crawling blues sounds emitting from behind him.

Nothin' But The Blues' is the most honest and cohesive album of Johnny's career, as well as one of his very best.

After a long period making rock records, Winter fronts the Muddy Waters band on the aptly titled Nothin' But the Blues (with Waters himself singing on one song, his own "Walking Thru the Park," which closes the album). Winter sounds happier than ever before on this Chicago blues workout.

(c)          The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(d)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(e)         Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
