Whether working as a singer, songwriter, promoter, arranger or engineer, Larry Marshall is one of the unsung heroes of the Studio One story. While acting as assistant to Chief Engineer Sylvan Morris, he worked in the studio with artists such as Horace Andy, Dennis Brown, Burning Spear and Freddy McKay. He recorded numerous titles under his own name, as a duo with Alvin Leslie as Larry & Alvin, and as a member of the Studio One scratch vocal group Freedom Singers. Nanny Goat (released as a single on the Supreme label in 1968) is arguably the first song to utilise a reggae rhythm (as distinct from a ska or a rock-steady rhythm). Larry Marshall recorded his best work at Studio One - it's just a pity that this classic collection is the only Larry Marshall album that Coxsone chose to release.
