KATE - The Beauty And The Beat ( Mariann 1987 )
Condition : Excellent: Cover And Record in Excellent condition.
The Norwegians out there will remember Kate Gulbrandsen from the Eurovision song contest (yes, "Mitt liv" is included), but like Anita Skorgan and Ketil Stokkan, Kate has more to offer than that. Produced by Rolf Lovland, these days ultra successful as mastermind of the Norwegian/Irish Secret Garden project, Lovland also provided many of the songs for the album. At worst, "The Beauty and the Beat" offers nondescript pop rock, but not entirely without redeeming features, such as the tasteful guitar solo on "The Woman and the Girl in Me". Kate's vocals are also pretty good, remiscent of Mia and Anita Skorgan, although not quite in the latter's league. Musically, she also gives the both the abovementioned artists a run for the money. Apart from the uptempo opener "Danger Men Working" as well as "The Woman and the Girl in Me", it takes the album until track 7 to really kick into gear. "Trick of the Heart" is an excellent uptempo AOR tune, with a blistering guitar solo to boot! "What Any Girl Would Do" is more laid-back, but good, as is the case with "All Over the World", a hi-tech pop tune with more tasteful guitar leads. Track 10, "When the Magic Dies" could have been straight off Skorgan's "White Magic" album, whereas closer "Touch My Fantasy" has AOR synths and guitar riffs coming at you from every angle - excellent! Then again, this is no surprise, with most of Norway's top session musicians (Svein Dag Hauge, Kjetil Bjerkestrand, Per Lindvall etc.) appearing on all songs. Kate has since mostly disappeared from the music scene, only to reappear occasionally, but this album is well worth tracking down if you are into a mixture of AOR, hi-tech, west coast, pop rock.
