Description
Julian Carrillo: Concertino Pour Piano En 1/3 De Ton (1948 for 1/3-tone piano and orchestra); Horizontes (1947 for violin in 1/4 tones, harp in 1/16 tones, and orchestra); Preludio a Colon (1924 for 1/4-tone guitar, 1/8-tone octavina, 1/16-tone harp, soprano, flute, and violin). Philips Modern Music Series 839.272
Utra-rare 1970s French lp with brilliant experimental works by the earliest modern western microtonalist. These recordings feature unique microtonal instruments Carrillo designed such as the eight-tone octavina, sixteenth-tone harp, and third-tone piano. The performers are pianist Bernard Flavigny and the Orchestre des Concerts Lamoureux conducted by the composer. Highly recommended beautiful and alien sounds.
Mexican composer, tuning theorist, violinist, and conductor Julian Carrillo first began exploring microtonality in 1895 and devised the term "el sonido trece" ("the 13th sound") to refer to microtonal intervals and the discarding of the traditional 12 tone scale. His first microtonal compositions came in the 1920s, when he worked with Leopold Stokowski and devised a new notational system to accommodate his music; he went on to develop several new instruments including a the octavina for eighth tones and the arpa citera for sixteenth tones (96 tones per octave). Carrillo's work is one of earliest and most important contributions to the modern microtonal music tradition of Ivan Wyschnegradsky, Harry Partch, Alois Haba, Ferruccio Busoni, Henk Badings, Lou Harrison, La Monte Young, Ben Johnston, Glenn Branca, Terry Riley, Charles Ives, John Eaton, James Tenney, Easley Blackwood, Emil Richards, Teo Macero, Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham, Pauline Oliveros, Alvin Lucier, Joe Maneri, etc.
