Hayden Proffitt Presents: Jim Head and His Del Ray's This is one of the Holy Grails of the Surf and Hot Rod Record Scene!
Hayden Proffitt Presents Jim Head and his Del Ray's on "HP" Records (the Hayden Proffitt & Lloyd Norman Music Company) Catalog # 22893.
There were Only 600 of these LP's pressed.
About Hayden Proffitt: Hayden Proffitt is a drag-strip history-making race driver. And he wanted to expand his golden touch from the Drag-race track to the recording industry by starting his own record label: "The Hayden Proffitt & Lloyd Norman Music Company."
He launched the label by releasing this LP by a local band that he discovered: Jim Head and his Del Ray's
They were a band from the San Bernardino, California area. And this was their only recorded output. It was recorded at Bill Locy Studios in Riverside, California in late 1964.
This record is still in its original shrink wrap! And, it is signed by Jim Head on the back cover: "To Barbara with Love, Jim Head!"
Jim signed the shrink wrap on the back cover, the original owner not wanting to open it at the event. Please note: If you were to remove the shrink wrap you would remove the signature. (see photo)
The cover picture is of Hayden Proffitt with Jim Head and his Del Rays around Proffitt’s famous 1965 Mercury Comet Cyclone drag car. The photo was taken moments after Hayden set the record at the famous Lion's Drag Strip in Long Beach, California. This famous drag strip is gone now, it was pushed out by development around the track in 1972!
For you car buffs, Hayden was the First "Stocker" to turn under 10ET! His time was 9.95 which means he reached a top speed of 142 mph, starting from a dead stop in a quarter mile!...Fast!
This LP was released shortly after, to commemorate the event.
Condition:
The cover is Mint Minus and and still in its original shrink! Someone has put a piece of scotch tape (years ago) on the upper right hand corner of the shrink to hold the shrink intact and on the cover. Preserving the cover and the signature. Does not affect cover.
This record was play-graded on my LINN SONDEK LP12 with a LINN k9 Cartridge tracking at 1.25 grams. I played it at a substancial volume and here are my results:
Record grade:
Visually: VG ...Some might say better.
Audibly: VG+
Side 1: There are a few small hair-line surface marks, also there is a "light" visual thumbnail mark across several tracks. This does not affect play. And there is what looks to be groove damage on track 5 through part of the song "Walk Away". But, in reality, there is NO groove damage at all, it's just visable, it plays fine. (See Photos)
There is also a spindle mark on the label on side 1 as well. No real damage, but I wanted to point it out. (See photo)
Side 2: Once again, a number of light surface hair-line marks. Looks better than side one. Both sides play a strong VG+.
In review, this LP Plays VERY well throughout with a minimal amount of surface background noise. When there is an occasional minor tick here or there, it never distracts from the listening experience. I think you will be very pleased with this record. I have been. It still has excellent high end and low end fidelity.
There were only 600 copies made of this album, and most of those got played into the ground, were thrown away, lost in a move, roomate took it, you get the idea.
This is not a perfect copy but ultimately a keeper-copy which has been in my collection for over 30 years.

If you view our other items, you will see that my wife and I use ebay to sell many things that we have collected over the years, as well as things we have found at estate sales.
But, I just wanted to let you know, first and foremost, I am a record guy. You can buy records from me with confidence and know you can trust my record-grading capabilities and descriptions.
I have been collecting records since the 1960s and selling records since the mid 1970s. I’ve run and have owned a number of record shops here in Columbus, Ohio over the years.
One of the first shops that some “old timers” might recall, was a little shop called Bent Back Records. We were a collectors’ shop specializing in vinyl. We also sponsored a weekly radio show called Psychedelic Sunday with host Russell Carey, on a local FM radio station QFM96.
For years, I ran monthly auctions in Goldmine Magazine (when it was a true monthly before Krause Publications purchased it) as well as the U.K’s Trouser Press. Perhaps you bought something from us?
I also know how to grade a record. I have been doing it for years. So, you can trust my gradings and descriptions to be accurate.
And, I also know how to pack and ship to ensure a safe arrival at your door. I use proper record mailers and pack well.
We remove the record from the cover to avoid the seams and sides from getting split.
PAYMENTS: Unless otherwise arranged, we expect payment to be made within 72 hours (3 days) after purchase. So, if you win the bid on Sunday at 8 pm, we would expect payment by Wednesday at 8 pm. Thank you in advance for your cooperation!
TERMS OF SALE: Items are sold "as is" according to the pictures and descriptions. I have endeavored to photograph and accurately describe every item as to its condition and authenticity to the best of my ability. Photographs are part of the description - I take multiple photographs and in most cases, photos are better than what you would find in a Sotheby's catalog. I am happy to answer any questions during the run of the sale. If you are still not sure about the item, please DO NOT bid until you are.
REFUNDS: Refunds are made only if there is a major error in the item description. Most of what we sell are antiques or collectibles, so they will naturally have some wear or age. We make every effort to describe and photograph condition fully. We do not accept returns if you change your mind or simply do not like the item. If we agree to a return, the buyer will be responsible for the shipping fee. Refunds are made for the original purchase price only. Shipping fees are not included. For a refund to be made, the item must be returned in the same condition as when it was originally shipped, and it must be returned within 7 days of receipt.
SHIPPING: If you want to discuss shipping options, let us know before bidding on the item.
We ship on Thursdays only, and only to those people whose payments have been confirmed. PLEASE NOTE: If your auction ends on a Wednesday, and if you want to be included in that week's shipping schedule, we must have your payment in-hand by 9 A.M. EDT on Thursday morning.
COMBINED SHIPPING COSTS: Yes, we do offer a discount on shipping for additional items.
SALES TAX TO OHIO PURCHASERS: We must charge 6.75% sales tax to all Ohio purchasers...that's the way it is.
INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS: Before paying, you need to wait for your invoice from us. Do not pay the automatically-generated invoice from eBay. We will need to calculate your shipping costs.
NEW MERCHANDISE: We add many new items each week from estate and tag sales. We hope to see you again and again! Check out our other items! Be sure to add me to your favorites list!
