?Discussions was the only commercially relieased recording made by the very first Howard Riley Trio, in December 1967.
It originally apperared on a small label, Chris Wellard's Oppotunity.
I first heard Brry Guy at the Little Theatre Club in 1966 playing with the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and felt that he was the most exciting bass-player i'd heard.
He was 19 years old. Jon Hiseman I'd heard even earlier, playing with the Mike Taylor Quartet opposite Ornette Coleman at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon in 1965.
When I finally arrived in London in September 1967 I sought both of them out.
This recording capture all three of us beginning to explore the possibilities of both opening up and abandoning standard material.
it was an exciting time. As far as I know, this was the first commercial recording by both Barry and myself. Jon left the Trio in the summer of 1968 to be replaced by Alan Jackson (to be heard on the Cds angle and The Day Will Come on CBS) and Tony Oxley (Flight on Turtle and Synopsis on Incus).
Barry Played a vital role in all the five Trio recordings. But - Discussions was the beggining.
