Rare DONALD BYRD, "Free Form" Blue Note 4118 LP, with original blue note insert sleeve. Blue Note Records BLP 4118 (Mono). Blue and White, New York Label with "VAN GELDER" in Deadwax Trailing. NM/NM-. This LP came from a collection once owned by local Seattle area Jazz DJ and like nearly all of his LPs was rarely played! Donald Byrd is considered one of the best hard bop trumpeters, and one of the leading jazz fusion musicians of the 1970s. From the 1950s through the mid 1960s he recorded as a leader, and also as a sideman with John Coltrane, Jackie McLean, Phil Woods, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Kenny Clarke. He founded the Jazz Lab quintet with Gigi Gryce in 1957. Byrd signed an exclusive contract with Blue Note in 1958. This record is considered a jazz classic, includes Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Billy Higgins. Highly recommended for jazz aficionados. Really amazing album!
