From 1953 and 1954 Blue Note sessions. A tour de force for Jay Jay Johnson as a leader displaying his unique up tempo individual note articulation technique (not easy on a tromebone) playing tight intricate charts with three different ensembles: Group one features 23 year old Clifford Brown’s crisp and precociously articulate solos while Jimmy Heath displays both his Tenor and Baritone prowess. This group’s rhythm section is three parts of the original MJQ: John Lewis, Percy Heath and the father of post-bop traps Kenny Clarke. Group two has Johnson alone on the front line backed by the all-star rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Charlie Mingus and Kenny Clarke with Sabu Martinez on what I call “bebop congas”. The incomparable Hank Mobley jumps into the third group’s spotlight with Jay Jay backed by the comp-master Horace Silver, bass icon Paul Chambers and the omnipresent sharp attack of the “Klookster” who returns to perform percussion duties. There’s a lot of music here and Johnson’s cerebral approach is evident and unique. This album is the quintessential primer to understand Johnson’s contribution to the evolution of the trombone in Jazz. ___
