Label/Format: Vertigo – original first issue format with large spiral on side two (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in supreme conditions: ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. The full swirl design on side one is pristine from rim to hole with no chipping or scuffs. The spindle traces this side are hardly even seen and hardly any at all. Side two has that lovely whiteness with no grubbiness or fingermarks that so often ruin this more fragile side. Both labels are close to connoisseur condition.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 141 grams. A very good weight for this record and label.

Rarity: Quite rare: and that is without taking condition into consideration. This album came in a 3 x 2 ft poster style cover made with single thickness unprotected card. Often this was wall-mounted which firstly means pin-holes or tape marks and in most cases where this happened, damage and fading. Storage had to be first-class for this cover to survive and only a small percentage of those who bought this on issue ever gave it the TLC it needed. Well this copy – again from the small top quality collection just purchased – has been given ultra TLC. Thus this record and cover have survived the years in fabulous conditions. I have only once, back in 2003, seen or offered a copy up to this standard and truly, they are very few and far between. Most Vertigo collectors will know how difficult these poster covers are to find even in a quality excellent condition. Higher ones are getting near impossible to find and there were several made in this style on this label. Examples in this type of condition are rare to very rare as more collectors try to complete a Spiral run, these are all-but disappearing.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The second Juicy Lucy album following their mini classic first (the one with the famous girl in the fruit cover). This one, from my experience is harder to find, and finding a copy with anything like an excellent cover is near impossible these days. Well this one grades even higher – the record looks little played and knowing the source of where it came from – a one-owner-from-new man, who played and stored his records with utmost care – it looks beautiful and plays to perfection. This multi-opening poster type cover will rarely ever be found this good, when found it’s always worn, torn, split or rubbed into submission, often even with holes where the folds cross. Well, this one firstly has never been mounted and has been cover protected from new, so few will better this one significantly. Just a little very minor burring to the top edges simply by pushing this into the cover. One of only two I have ever seen with a near perfect spine with ALL the fragile text included, and against all odds, even this retains super neat shape and has not flattened, scuffed or feathered (please see my close up pictures of this impossibly fragile area). Lie Back… is classic blues inspired rock, I feel this is even a stronger album than the debut. The highlight for me – but I am biased of course – is the band’s stunning rendition of Frank Zappa’s masterpiece ‘Willie the Pimp’, but there is not a filler track included in the nine of offer. Original Vertigo spiral albums, especially in top condition are getting increasingly hard to find now, and I am certain this copy will please even the more discerning collectors of quite possibly the world’s most desirable and collectable rock label. A top quality album and example, do not lose this one.

Cover Condition and Details: EXCELLENT(++): a multi-folded poster type measuring around 36 x 24 inches (please see large full size pictures of the fold-outs). Unlaminated, made with quite thin matt, smooth card. Printed and made in England by Howard Printers.

Cover Faces: Vertigo poster-style covers have to be put into true perspective: firstly, many were wall-mounted; secondly, few will ever survive in top conditions these days and thirdly, these albums did not sell in big numbers and rare from the start. These are more difficult to store and even the few more careful collectors from issue tome found it hard to keep them from getting creased, rubbed, torn and damaged. Viewing this example in such condition is a pretty rare sight, even though it’s not perfect, it may be as close as an available one ever really gets. There is a little light creasing to some corners (will not have this as a bare minimum?) and a little very mild burring to the top edges with two or three very fine and faint surface creases. In context, all incredibly minor and faint blemishes. There are 12 separate segments to this cover when fully opened out and all are in superb, clean, fresh and highly attractive condition, devoid of the usual rubbing, grubbiness and heavy creases most are seen with. All the folds are strong and unweakened and importantly, not tears. Any marks are minuscule and this retains a huge degree of freshness with the card still mostly stiff and unsoftened, bar the very top edge tips – this being somewhat critical. Another factor that makes this cover even more special, it the folding which is very neat and precise. The edges meet up flush to near flush, the right and bottom edges are nigh-one perfectly square and that makes a huge difference to the visual pleasure. Many of these poster covers were folded haphazardly and out-of-square, which spoils the look. I consider this an important factor for the more discerning collector. Even the top edges are only a fraction out and not being quite flush means they become more vulnerable of course. The ‘back side’ graphic of the live band is nigh-on pristine and totally unaged or damaged. I will stop now – I will let my individual pictures do the talking – note the fold-lines too, rarely seen this strong, neat and unsplit AND even retaining their ink, so many whiten and thin around these vulnerable ‘working’ areas. This is a superb cover that probably has not seen light-of-day for decades.

Cover Edges/Corners: Firstly, the spine: ultra solid, erect with barely a trace of any rubbing, even on the perilous fold areas. Even the cornertips here have avoided any real trauma, any tip rubbing on the entire cover in fact are tiny, few and faint. The bottom and right edges (see when folded) are all very neat, mostly crisp and sharp with any burr traces minimal and few. Most of the top edges are similar with just a minor and small amount of thickening and burr traces to the back edge that is a fraction proud of total square. A little too on one of the centre edges – but let’s be realistic, will any example of this cover have totally pristine, ultra crisp edges (without being trimmed) – and I GUARANTEE – this cover has NOT been trimmed or enhanced in any way – not needed, it’s a natural beauty that has been carefully looked after.

Cover Summary: An impressively strong, barely worn all-round example of this immensely fragile and intolerant 70’s Spiral cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): barely any real wear, but marked down a little due to darkening of the seam adhesive – simply a trait of these and similar inners – few are seen without it. Other than that, little else to fault on this equally splendid Swirl inner. Both window circles are pristine, crispa and sharp and the lining clear, firmly attached with onlhy a mild trace of crinkle. Any creasing light and few and all edges unsplit with NO repairs. This one is date-coded 0970 (September 1970)

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, very light and faint. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This impressive Spiral record plays up to it’s high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Play-graded, as usual, on a very revealing system, few copies will outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record, cover and even the inner will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. Most Spiral collectors will treasure this one.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
