Description

Here is an original UK copy of Blue by The John Dummer Band featuring Nick Pickett on the sought-after Vertigo swirl label (catalogue no. 6360 055) from 1972. They don't come much rarer than this. As you can see from the pictures, this original vinyl has hardly been played. I think it's virtually flawless. Even when examined under harsh halogen light it appears to have no marks whatsover on either side of the vinyl. Not even a paper scuff. It looks as it would have done the day it left the pressing plant. Both Vertigo labels look flawless too. Under halogen light I can just see the lightest of spindle marks on one label indicating that this LP has been played no more than a handful of times. I can see no spindle marks whatsoever on the other (swirl) side. The record lies perfectly flat on the turntable and performs superbly with precision clarity and no distortion, just as it would have done if you were taking it home from the shops in 1972. The music itself is brilliant, the quality of playing superlative, and listening to this disc is a wonderful top end aural experience. You can pick out every instrument in each channel - it's such a bright vibrant recording. This disc easily grades EX (Record Collector grading). Although the original Roger Dean designed non-laminated gatefold cover looks smart in my photos, it has two coloured-in sticker removal marks. I have tried to highlight these areas in my photos and I took numerous shots from various angles but unfortunately my camera skills clearly aren't up to it, but trust me - THERE ARE TWO SMALL COLOURED IN STICKER REMOVAL MARKS. If you look at my pictures you should see them - the larger mark (top left front) is no larger than about 25mm X 15mm, the other (top right front) about half that ... in other words both the size of small price stickers. Having said that the two or three copies of this LP I have seen 'in the flesh' have each suffered from sticker removal marks. So make no mistake, this is certainly one of the better ones. This is not some floppy dog-eared scrawled upon beer mat of a sleeve but a strapping survivor boasting a beautiful example of a very clever Roger Dean touch. The layered cut-out Dean designed into the front cover is fully intact and near perfect. This is the vulnerable area of this cover, with many of these cut-out sections probably having been torn, creased or accidentally pulled apart but rest assured, this is exactly how it left the factory ... unmessed with and all together, just as it should be. The inside gatefold is near perfect while the outside of the sleeve exhibits a little edgewear along the top and bottom, and along the spine a little, and there's a couple of small marks on the rear, a few tiny indentations, perhaps from storage (flip, when a cover is just one shade of red you notice every little speck!). So it's a difficult cover to grade because in many respects they're rarely found anywhere near this condition but having thought about it for a while I don't feel comfortable giving a grading so I'll leave it up to you to make up your own mind from the evidence.
