Jazz aficionados are known for their inability to agree on anything, and their ability to agree on nothing (and with gusto!). These loveable folks have a great talent for skillfully avoiding consensus wherever possible.

Well, now that this has been reaffirmed, we have here one album where consensus is not only possible - it is unavoidable. We feel we speak for everyone when we say that this is one of top-5 finest Jazz recordings in the history of modern Jazz. It is right up there with the works of Miles Davis, John Coltrane himself, Cannonball Adderley, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins. The interplay of John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and others on this beauty will leave listener begging and pleading for more after the album is over; and the combination of renaissance tunes given African-American treatment, mesmerizing blues themes, resonant, textured, polyrhythmic African chants, and a seamless, free-flow improvisation is simply mind-blowing. Incredible musicianship is a whole different story altogether - but if you don't know this by now, we won't educate you; you have to find out for yourself.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VERY GOOD+(+) . CAUTION: The vinyl is NOT MINT or NEAR MINT, but is nevertheless in a very nice and clean condition. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light and superficial, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters)

(b)          The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or  his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME  Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or  personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Stereo  pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its mono  counterpart. The mix is more graphic, the sound resolution more precise, and the channel separation (which does not exist on mono version) adds a whole new dimension to the music. Also, the stereo mixes are (by definition) somewhat different than on the mono version. We estimate that mono copies of this album outnumber stereo copies  by a ratio of at least 3:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        The gatefold cover has partially split seams on 3 out of 4 "legs" of the cover (about 1/2, 1 and 3 inches)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.   Inside gatefold has some ring wear as well

-         Inside gatefold has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.   Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Cover has a minor (BARELY VISIBLE) curly (wavy) warp across the back panel (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No stickers or labels

-        No water damage

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or  cuts.

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
