Emi Custom Serice Pressing from Country Legend John Ashe.
These early EMI Custom Service Pressings were made in limited quantities for the artist to send to radio stations for airplay or to record companies to try and get a record deal from. They acted as an early Promotional item. Some got an "offical" Record Company release and some didn't.
Over the years John had written hundreds of Aussie comical songs, although he couldn’t find anyone to record them. Hence the reason he had started recording his own comedy songs through EMI. His song ‘The Beer, Boys, Is Here was believed to be the true sequel to ‘A Pub With No Beer’ made famous by the late Slim Dusty, and like ‘The Pub’ he had also used the old time tune ‘Beautiful Dreamer’.
Around 1960 while holidaying in Sydney, John noticed that a singing comedian named Chad Morgan had sold many thousand records through EMI. When ‘The Sheik’ arrived with his show in Townsville, John Ashe had to see what Morgan was all about. Needless to say, he was impressed and found Chad to be a first rate Clown. Various songs that John had written suited Chad’s style and in 1975 Morgan released an LP ‘Chad Morgan Sings John Ashe’ as Slim Dusty had done previously.
1907 – Born on the 4th of September in Drummoyne, Sydney. Learnt the piano as a child, which fostered his interest in classical music.
1938 – Wrote his first song.
1956 – Slim Dusty and Chad Morgan met John and both recorded a number of his songs over the years. His song “Growin’ the Golden Fleece” was very popular
1957 - Wrote “Harry The Breaker” which was recorded by Slim Dusty.
1968 – Wrote a book of musical poems and was made a Fellow Of The International Academy Of Poets, Cambridge, England.
1978 – Inducted into the Tamworth Hands of Fame.
