JIMMY FORREST - MOST MUCH 1989 ISSUE REMASTERED BY THE FAMOUS PHIL DE LANCIE
Jimmy Forrest came up through the big band ranks and his tasty, swinging tenor echoes this vital experience in the very cavern of his big sound. That strength-with-warmth stands out on "Autumn Leaves," and the solid blues feeling oozed through on "Soft Winds," "Most Much" and "Robbins' Nest," contrasting with the cool right-hand solo lines of pianist Hugh Lawson. For variety there is the calypso, "Matilda," long associated with Harry Belafonte, its rhythm aided here by Ray Barretto's conga. For a bonus, there are "I Love You" and "Sonny Boy," recorded on the same date as the others but heretofore issued only on another Forrest album, Soul Street. Track Listings 1. Matilda 2. Annie Laurie 3. Autumn Leaves 4. My Buddy 5. I Love You 6. Soft Winds 7. Robbins' Nest 8. Most Much 9. Sonny BoyJIMMY FORREST - FORREST FIRE 1985 ISSUE
Jimmy Forrest was an archetypical tenor saxophonist who could mix blues, bebop, and ballads into a repertoire that was at once soulful, harmonically aware, and tuneful. This recording, one of the first for organist Larry Young and his working trio, was done at the time Forrest and Harry "Sweets" Edison were co-leading a group and before the time Forrest went on to even greater visibility as a member of Count Basie's orchestra. Track Listings 1. Remember 2. Dexter's Deck 3. Jim's Jams 4. Bags' Groove 5. When Your Lover Has Gone 6. Help!OUT OF THE FORREST FANTASY RECORDS 1984 ISSUE
From the time Coleman Hawkins firmly established the tenor saxophone on the jazz map, it has been one of the most potent forces in the music, its best practioners able to raise the roof with a jumping blues, soothe the savage beast with a tender love ballad, and do just about anything in between. At the time of this recording (1961), Jimmy Forrest, the St. Louis-born reedman, was a veteran of the Fate Marable, Jay McShann, Andy Kirk, and Duke Ellington bands. Later in his career he starred with Count Basie. Here he leads a quartet of teammates from the combo of "Sweets" Edison, including the young Austrian pianist Joe Zawinul, through a gamut of the aforementioned moods from "Crash Program" to the caressing "That's All," with a few tips of the cap to Ben Webster along the way. "A comfortable unaffected session built around Forrest's solid blowing." - John A. Tynan, Down Beat Track Listings 1. Bolo Blues 2. I Cried for You (Now It's Your Turn to Cry Over Me) 3. I've Got a Right to Cry 4. This Can't Be Love 5. By the River Sainte Marie 6. Yesterdays 7. Crash Program 8. BONUS FORREST LP - JIMMY FORREST BLACK FORREST DELMARK RECORDS RELEASE WITH GRANT GREEN - Playing on the cusp of Kansas City swing and bebop, Jimmy Forrest fashioned his tone from St. Louis, a perfect spot to mix jazz languages, situated as it is between K.C. and the Big Apple. On this 1959 date, Forrest opens up standard jams like "These Foolish Things" and "What's New" and jumps inside with the help of a top-shelf unit: guitarist and fellow St. Louisan GRANT GREEN(in his recording debut), drummer, ELVIN JONES pianist HAROLD MABERN and bassist Gene Ramey. Forrest's tenor tone alternates between punchingly tough and waveringly singsong (à la the great LESTER YOUNG who cut his own swath through K.C.). The tunes are all festively loose, except when they're touching. As for the band, little more can be said than their very names to underscore their position in the jazz canon.
