Label/Format: Track – Intense black with silver ink, smooth finish, but do look slightly textured to the eye.

Label Conditions: Firstly, this has a very rare factory error – both sides of the record have a ‘side one’ label. This is something that does happen but only very rarely. The original owner has made a small and light mark near the ‘1’ on side two to easily see the difference. Both labels are very clean and still fresh looking, spindle marks are moderate and largely confined to within the inner deep ring ridge and have removed no ink, these are fine and only show under angled light. Even the hole rims have remained unchipped or whitened. There is no chipping to the labels surface at all, the small marks on side one are silver ink marks, clearly there from manufacture, not chips or rubs. So both are attractive, but again I remind, both are ‘Side One’. Many serious collectors I would feel sure, will consider this an interesting and rare ‘mis-press’ rather than a flaw. My scans make what is here more than clear.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 171 grams. A stunning weight for a standard issue, I have never held any Axis original that came anywhere near this incredible weight.

Rarity & Overview: Rare: and these days getting very rare indeed especially with the insert (and this insert is in superb condition). The stereo version, which I personally prefer (and not just saying that because I have one to offer, I have a mono coming soon too) is rarer than the mono. The ‘Summer of Love’ was still very much the era for the mono record and outsold the stereo version by a high degree. Very early pressings are often trashed beyond use, although this one has been played a number of times, I would suggest mostly carefully as it has few marks and plays with impressive clean sound with little unwanted. I am not saying this copy is perfect but it does set a high bar, a few very brief and light ticks at the very beginning from a small mark and a tiny few ultra light in the odd place or two further in. But, and a huge BUT, this record plays with no distortion or groovewear and any surface sounds tiny, few and faint – this too being played on a highly critical turntable and system. This one even amazed me and my play-grade was very enjoyable. Can I make it quite clear, although both sides of the record have a ‘Side 1’ label, the record is totally normal and plays side one and two like all copies. The rare insert sheet is in superb condition as well, although not really a poster, a lot of owners did actually wall mount it – this has not been. Printing quality on this insert also varies considerably. The deep red text matter is often pronted paler and fuzzy and becomes very difficult to read. This one is ultra clear and sharp and is practically as good as they ever get. Or course, this insert is guaranteed original, NOT a repro and has to be one of the best I have ever seen, even the back is untoned and fresh looking and the front totally unfaded with no hard creasing and no grubbiness (more on this further down). Lastly, for now, the cover, seldom seen devoid of major laminate, creasing or chipping issues. This one has survived the years very well indeed with little to fault and really does look highly impressive. A cover made the same for mono and stereo, this has it’s rare original ‘stereo’ sticker on the front for easy identification to seller and collector. Even the original inner is included with it’s polylinine neat and clear. It is British patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Some creasing but fully intact and clean. So, a totally complete very early example with a massively pressed record, any standard record that exceeds 150 grams is a heavyweight, any that break the 170 gram barrier is a rare ultra heavyweight. Few records ever get pressed this heavy, the weight of this disc will be immediately apparent to any winning bidder. Although my forthcoming mono example is still an impressive 159 grams, it is still 12 grams lighter than this rarer stereo. An unusual and impressive example in many ways, not perfect, but so hard to find complete, it will delight many fans and collectors for sure.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Always a pleasure to offer a rarer very early stereo copy of this Hendrix treasure - the second of the three Experience classics - they are getting very hard to find at all now here in the UK, nice copies that play well are even more elusive. This album charted at 5 and 3 in the UK and US respectively, a hugely strong follow-up to the classic Are You Experienced, slightly less demonstrative of his guitar skills but proving himself as a formidable song writer, including several reflective compositions none better than the haunting ‘Little Wing’. Axis… always features high in any list of all times greats and justifiably so. How many times do you see this record offered, just to find its been played to destruction? Excessive masses of spindle marks that sometimes almost cover the labels and white frays around the centre hole that has even enlarged and become lose fitting around the spindle, the record covered in a multitude of scratches, scuffs and a dulled grey looking piece of vinyl covered in a maze of finger marks or foreign debris? Yes, this copy has been played a few times but the playing surfaces are still impressively clean and attractive with very few marks. A tiny one at the beginning has a tiny few brief ticks. ‘EXP” is a very fragile opening track and with such fine grooves for the spoken intro, seldom escapes some blemishing and often crackle very badly. This has little at all and although very briefly blemished for a few seconds only, remains one of the cleanest samples of this opener I have heard for a while. An album as important as most in that great year of 1967 - the ‘Summer of Love’ - just think this record was actually purchased while the great man was still alive - This makes a record like this indispensable. The stereo mix is fantastic, especially on the aforementioned opener with highly effective channel-to-channel interplay. I prefer psych albums in stereo as it adds to the ‘head effect’. The inclusion of the original poster/lyric insert which only came with a handful of the very early copies is a massive bonus too, especially seen so focused, clean and unworn. The sound via vinyl for this vintage recording will never be beaten, this is the real thing, no remixing, remastering no tampering, it was produced by Chas Chandler and this is how he wanted it to sound - why fool around with perfection? Even with a tiny few minor surface sounds or sporadic click or two, nothing will surpass the experience on the analogue format. This sound and mix on this vintage Track copy is definitive, sit back and enjoy it and listen in awe of the master genius that was Jimi Hendrix.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a gatefold format with a laminated front and back. This ends inside the spread on four external flipbacks situated on the top and bottom edges. Printed and made by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd, London. No was text printed on this spine and this is a dual purpose mono and stereo cover. This one has it’s original small ‘STEREO’ sticker on the front, even this small detail sticker will prove hard to find.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is a cover that often suffers laminate issues, especially peeling and chipping of the edges. The only chipping here is on the spine ends and few will ever not be – only quite small here. The laminate retains a lovely shine, clarity and freshness so the quite stunning graphic can be enjoyed to the near maximum. The colour hue and intensity is superbly bright, vivid and age-defying. There are few marks at all and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and any creasing minimal. Most all of any present are fine edge types that few, if any will avoid totally, Any present show little with nothing even close to approaching moderate, most fine and faint with next to no visual impact. Even under light, hardly any evidence of any friction rubs or dulling and even the ultra fine surface marks seem almost inconspicuous. The front also retains it’s original ‘STEREO’ sticker which has become a little transparent over the vast number of years with a trace of grubbiness around it’s extreme edges, but this appears unremoved or tampered with, just a tiny lift on the top right corner, this helps make this dual format cover more uniquely ‘stereo’. The back has some mild record impression and light dulling around the shape – with a massive 171 gram record inside for 44-years, can this be a surprise? Again, with normall viewing, it hardly even shows and how many will avoid this either? Overall, both sides are very impressive and importantly look fantastic to the eye, it will take an amazing example to better this significantly.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is very impressive with barely any real wear at all. Being matt finished, a few light handling traces from the fingers is near impossible to avoid on a cover this substantial age. Crucially, those four flipbacks on the top and bottom edges are near immaculate with no wear, damage or even edge burring. No area has stuck and pulled and that in-itself is rare but most welcome news. The man’s picture has an eerie menace and adds a real sense of presence to this classic cover – without doubt, one of the most colourful classics in rock history.

Top Edges: Both ends of the corners have rubbed, but that apart, both edges are superb and fully laminated and silky smooth to the fingertip with no scuffing or peeling.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front edge is closed and has barely any outside chipping or wear. The inside has mildish traces of burring and light thickening. The back opening edge has hardly wear at all and remains sharp and crisp, again with no outside chipping. Both are untrimmed with no feathering.

Spine and Text: The spine is a crucial and critical area of this cover and very rarely does it escape laminate peeling, chipping and damage. This one is still very solid, straight with barely any compression. Folded square with little wear up to the corners that have chipped and rubbed. The front fold has a couple of small surface chips but the back one has none. The laminate, almost incredibly, has no peeling and any cracking is negligible and tiny. Just opening this vintage cover will form a central crease, then it will crack, peel and wear – any central crease is very fine and virtually the laminate is intact and certainly with no wear to the graphic that flows around (please see my spine picture to confirm this detail).

Corners: All show some wear, mostly on or near the tips, nothing excessive or heavy, few examples of this cover will escape this as a bare minimum.

Cover Summary: A lovely item, some blemishes or minor wear traces, yes, but nothing really serious and this will better probably the majority offered. This vintage cover is way above average - I have seen the odd one better, but believe me I have several far, far worse. This should please many, if not most collectors if not the perfectionist.

The Insert Poster: EXCELLENT(++): firstly, this is the genuine article, photocopies will be around offered as the real thing - Beware!, but this item will never be easy to fake and get away with. Deep magenta text on a very deep orange background, but printing quality really does vary. This one has text very clear, sharp and focused making the lyrics quite easy to read. It is a notorious fragile item that fades, tears and creases badly if not looked after properly. This example HAS NOT been mounted, meaning there are no pin-holes, Blue-Tak or cellotape marks, it’s quite unusual to see the corners looking this neat and undamaged, just one tiny tip crease and that’s about it. The back shows no marks at all and is still a lovely real white, not darkened or toned. This single folded large format sheet has no real creasing and any crinkle or handling wrinkle is minimal and very light indeed. The front retains amazing deep rich colour and shows few marks at all. The original fold-line is as solid as when made, unweakened or ‘stressed’ and shows no splits or tears. This is probably the best insert I have ever seen for this famous album and so many examples will not have it. Although the cover and record have a few blemishes or marks, this very rare insert shows little and this will please most-all collectors I feel sure. Do not underestimate how difficult this is to find like this.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(-): a plain white, polylined inner with two very neat and mostly crisp window circles and clear lining. This has a little crinkle but remains very solidly intact. One corner crease but few others and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This has a British patents number with ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’ text., there is minimal discolouration even to the seam areas.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading & Audio Quality: NEAR EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT: even with a very small scratch at the very beginning of ‘EXP’, this vintage record is worthy of this grading. A massively pressed example that pushes the weight limit to maximum, will a heavier stereo first issue exist? A copy played a number of times, but for the most part, I suggest carefully. The spindle marks are spread all over the labels and remain mostly inside the small inner ring ridge circle. Under light, some fine surface marks, but most-all are superficial with any clicks few and faint. Even the tiny few on ‘EXP’ are only very brief indeed (around 9 to 10), most are light to very light. The stereo imagery on this psych Sci-Fi opener is simply stunning, and of course, missing on the mono version. Swathes of sound pulsate from speaker-to-speaker leading into the gentle second track ‘Up From the Skies’. ‘EXP’ plays superbly those brief clicks apart without the usual crackle that often ruins this uncompromising track. Both playing surfaces look strong with a very fine shine and deep blackness. Sound quality is impressive with NO distortion and any surface sounds minimal, few and faint – a highly enjoyable experience indeed. Without doubt, this has never been subjected to old mono record players, those who bought the stereo version mostly did so to play on stereo equipment – there was a choice in the UK in 1967 – most bought the mono for the purpose of playing on the appropriate record player. Musically, this is vintage classic Hendrix, skillfully blending rock and psychedelia. This record offers wonderful entertainment with little unwanted at all after the first few brief revs. Hearing this classic devoid of groovewear, crackle, distortion and loud, repetitive clicks is a joy and I feel most fans and collectors will cherish this second groundbreaking album.

End Piece: An impressive copy, for overall sound, probably undergraded. Let your ears be the judge . Including one of the best inserts I have ever seen, as stated it only came with some early copies, not all, and how many have been lost, destroyed, or written off? This one is a beauty and the cover is pretty splendid too. I emphasise my pictures are exactly as seen, I do not enhance or tweak with digital programes, what you see is what you get. I enjoyed hearing this again in stereo, it has been a considerable amount of time, my last one being a mono from several years back. I enjoyed this immehsely and I hope the winning bidder does too. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
