Label/Format: Island – first pressing format as seen, these have matt, heavily textured surfaces and the deep inner ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, still fresh and highly attractive. Spindle marks are moderate as seen under angled light, these are mostly confined to the inner ring area around the hole. There is barely any wear to the actual hole rim itself and two cleaner, finer looking examples will never be easy to find on this album.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare as a genuine first issue. An album pressed many times on various format Island labels. This was a very late release, and one of the final original albums issued on the orange ‘eyeball’ Island label. Quickly repressed on the black block pink label, then pressed again on the full pink i format, some textured, some smooth. Then on just about all Island versions thereafter. Few originals survive in better visual or playing conditions. This heavyweight robust original has some surface marks, but these are superficial with no clicks. A little minor, gentle surface sound here-and-there, mostly on the non-music areas. Overall, a copy that plays impressively with all the music and vocals clear, focused and sharp, of and of course with ultimate detail and sound. Also try finding this original with a better cover – another incredibly difficult unprotected Island sleeve that is rarely seen approaching excellent – this one goes somewhat beyond that grade and has to be the very finest first issue cover I have yet seen. The famous woodcut graphic and inside pop-up working feature are little short of immaculate. The back is the area that usually suffers most from grubbiness, ageing and ring wear – this has practically avoided all. Indeed this truly beautiful cover could prove a massive upgrade for many – and it has to be a strong contender for the best Island cover design ever made. The album itself is a masterpiece and one of my favourite 1960s albums ever. The packaging is sublime and rarely seen like this. Overall a rare original and with a cover in this condition, beyond rare these days.

Brief Info: Within the genre of ‘classic’ rock, there are few better albums than this second Jethro Tull set. Everything about this album is perfect – great songs, sublime packaging, fantastic sound and performance – no collection should not have a copy of ‘Stand Up’. Following the brilliant debut album, Mick Abrahams departed for form Blodwyn Pig, this was never going to be easy, but the band rose to even greater heights. Beautifully packaged with it’s ‘working’ pop-up woodcut design cover, the details on the front are little short of remarkable as I hope my picture shows. Musically, for me anyway, this is Jethro Tull’s best ever album, not a second is wasted, every track is sublime and beautifully recorded too. Blending heavy and mellow songs with gorgeous instrumentation including strings, the details hidden within these vintage grooves are never-ending. This is a very first pressing, they are elusive, it one of the very last albums pressed on this label before all the changes that followed. Some marks as stated, but superficial with minimal to no audio affect. The cover is fantastic with hardly any wear or even ageing. The pop-up working inside part is pristine as seen from front, back and even semi-folded views. Not a record for visual purists, but more than made up by the audio quality of which is mostly superb – a little surface sound here-and-there, mostly on the non-music areas. Without doubt, the cover could prove a massive upgrade for some, this is rarely seen this nice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): arguably better for a cover that is incredibly hard to find clean and unworn. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. The inside has the working pop-up intricately cut band featured, printed on both front and back as seen. Printed and made in England, uncredited with the ILPS 9103 catalogue number and Basing Street address imprint. Includes the plain white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The beautiful woodcut and incredibly detailed graphic looks hugely fresh and impressive with barely anything to fault bar the odd tiny corner rub, and how many will avoid that as the barest minimum? One that does maximum justice to this stunning piece of artwork. This one has the pale yellow hue and finding one better with a first issue heavy pressed record inside will prove massively difficult.

Cover Back: This is the side that usually suffers the most. Quite honestly, this could prove near impossible to find better. Still very white without the usual grubbiness, record impression or ring wear. A small minor tip crease to the top right with any hint of grubbiness or discolouration bordering on minuscule – mere traces near the very edges being critical. This is truly outstanding and by some margin, the very very best I have seen for a considerable amount of time (if not ever).

Cover Inner Gatefold: All close to perfect. The pop-up is superb immaculate as seen. These were stuck to the cover by hand, and their position is critical work perfectly as this one does. Absolutely no damage or creasing to this complex shaped moving part – I will let my pictures do the talking – this is a piece of classic record cover art.

Top Edges: Straight, flush, flat and barely worn.

Bottom Edges: As above, any rub traces minuscule.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any wear agin. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and very well centred. The merest hint of toning traces towards the top, almost as light and faint as it gets. Even the folds have avoided scuffs or rubbing.

Corners: A small tip rub on the bottom right leading corner, any other rubbing is tiny and very light indeed. A small tip crease as stated on the back top right, that being the only evidence of a minor dink, there are no others.

Cover Summary: A truly beautiful all-round example of this classic late 1960’s cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. This one that does its beauty nigh-on maximum justice, and how many ever do? This fantastic item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic plain solid white unlined inner, these typical for Island at this time. A little consistent age darkening of the paper with a little, quite light corner creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD(++): still a very fine visual copy that is clean with fine shine and heavily pressed on thick, robust Pye-manufactured vinyl. A copy played a few times, but avoiding any major mishaps. There are some visible surface marks, but no penetrating or damaging stylus scratches. These are nigh-on all superficial and non-sounding and little affects or spoils the quality of the audio and detail this deep-grooved original has to offer. In fact this record plays with impressive sound. Visually not for purists or the highly discerning, but the relatively few and light marks not affecting sound, this should please many collectors – and genuine first issues are getting increasingly hard to find.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent rock classic plays above it’s very fine visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and the aforementioned, mostly light surface marks are pretty much all ignored by a quality, fine stylus. A little gentle surface sound was heard on the run-in grooves on side two, but disappear almost immediately the music starts, then any traces here-and-there and then mostly between the odd couple or three songs, the music areas little affected. So must enough to gently and politely remind a 47-year-old record is being played, and personally, I have few qualms with that. Any minor blemishes washed over me, I simply enjoyed the true beauty of the sound and music on offer, it will blow away any digital version I have heard to date. No tracking issues* or invisible pressing nasties – subcontracted Pye pressings could sometimes be variable, but this is a fine heavyweight disc. Few available, first pressings will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Not quite for the audiophile purists who only want ‘perfection’ at any cost, but this sets a high standard which I enjoyed immensely. An album I never tire of listening too and a true classic. Little, if indeed anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will could difficult to find significantly better on this first label format and can be highly recommended to many collectors. As stated – the cover is sublime and almost worthy of the price alone.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
