Brief Artist & Album Info: ‘There is some fun going forward:’ was the only sampler made on Dandelion Records. Quite a late one as well from 1972, it has the highest catalogue number of any Dandelion album so it’s promotional intentions were for albums already issued. The label was founded as a labour-of-love by radio DJ John Peel, it was a small independent label made to offer alternative artists and bands a chance to record their music, some possibly would have struggled to get a major company deal. So Dandelion is also historically important as being one of the first true independent labels. Many who appeared on it were quite uncommercial with only a couple of featured acts ever breaking into chart territory. A couple on this quality sampler never made albums on this label at all – John Trevor and Country Sun. For me, the two outstanding acts included are the wonderful Bridget St John, who Peel quotes, along with Sandy Denny, as his favourite female singers ever. And Tractor who end side one in blistering style with a the brilliant ‘All Ends Up’. But all songs are really impressive. Dandelion Records was quite short-lived and folded in 1973, it was suggested Peel lost interest when a few albums started to sell better. This album comes with a very flimsy and fragile textured cover that includes Peel and a mysterious woman in a bath. The pair also seen much larger on the scarce gatefold sized orange poster that is in very fine condition and unmounted. Overall, a very fine copy – the cover ofter seen heavily worn or damaged by stickers – and the record plays very well with little unwanted. This a rare chance to see this album along with ‘John Peel Presents Top Gear’ for sale at the same time by one seller.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single unlaminated format with surface texturing on both sides. Made with quite soft and flimsy card. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group, includes the scarce orange paper gatefold size poster and 1972 date-coded Polydor lined inner sleeve. NOTE: I have covered over the sensitive areas of the cover and poster in red – obviously, that is NOT present on the real thing.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: The odd small corner tip-in likely.

Cover Front: This is a ruthlessly revealing and fragile, hugely wear-prone cover. So to find one in near excellent condition is okay by me. The front has only very gentle traces of any rubbing to the textured surface, this mostly near the bottom edge. Under angled light, some ‘ghosting’ traces of historic stickers can be seen, but these have caused NO damage to the surface or pull any ink, that is why I use the term ‘ghosting’, any any visual evidence of them even being there is ultra faint indeed and hardly even seen viewed normally full-on. One mild corner crease (to right), any others are super fine edge hairlines that few will ever avoid on such thin card. Actually not that easy to find this cover without often major sticker damage or tears, so I consider this front to be way above average and still attractive overall.

Cover Back: The back is just the same and just as prone to all forms of wear. The lack of ringwear to both sides is a considerable plus. This does have a have a few light pressing marks, again they hardly show with normal viewing. The comprehensive text can probably be read from my picture using the new Ebay magnifying glass feature.

Top Edge: Straight and neat with minimal traces of any wear.

Bottom Edge: Mainly light patchy surface rubbing, black storage edges will rarely escape with none.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring light, most near the very top as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. All text is present with minimal rubbing traces, also quite well centred on a narrow depth.

Corners: Fine to very fine shape with little wear apparent, but as mentioned further up, small tip-ins to the tips done by previous owner.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very fragile 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find significantly better. This has more positives than negatives and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a Polydor style lined inner that is date-coded 0372 (March 1972). It has two neat window circles and clear polylining. A little aged with some darkening of the seam area adhesive and a few small nicks to the top opening edges. Minimal creasing and all closed edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(++): this is superb, and only marked down a fraction for a one super-fine corner crease near the E.J.D. imprint. Made with very thin orange, very gently textured paper with a very matt surface. It has one manufactured fold which is very solid with no splits. The same quite daring graphic is used, but much larger – the wall is adorned with Dandelion artists, including Peel’s favourite Bridget St John (who I really like as well). This poster is clean, fresh and importantly, unmounted with no tape marks or pinholes. This is very fragile and seldom seen untorn or unmounted, it will prove very difficult to find better and is an integral part of this Dandelion set.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with very fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with quite modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks tiny, few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality Dandelion sampler – that includes two new unissued songs – plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd sporadic tick that is so hard to avoid totally – and overall, a very fine Polydor pressing. Few copies will outperform this early copy significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended as a fine totally complete package.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
